Peoria's Commitment to Sustainability
The City of Peoria's sustainability efforts seek to reduce the city’s effect on the environment, conserve energy, and encourage citizens to meet their needs without compromising the needs of the future. Living in a desert environment makes it even more important to work together as a community to conserve, be wise, and thrive.
Peoria's Sustainable University is a gateway to help residents proactively live in harmony with their natural surroundings. All the courses at Sustainable U have one thing in common: to empower residents to make small changes toward a sustainable future. Sustainability Action Plan
The City of Peoria established a Sustainability Green Team to help city departments continue to develop sustainability-oriented goals, tracking success metrics, and encourage cross-communication. For Peoria, sustainability means working together to make a difference, while encouraging community-wide sustainability through interactions with citizens via online resources, social media outlets, public forums, and the exchange of ideas. The action plan attached below was updated in 2016 and a new version is currently in the works.
Old Town Community Gardens
Peoria’s inaugural community garden began as an empty lot in the heart of Peroia’s townsite, and grew into a thriving place of community and learning. Once an aesthetic blemish in Peoria’s old town, the parcel, has now become a beautiful, healthy garden where the community is producing sustainable, local, organic food! Visit the garden at the corner of 83rd Avenue and Madison Street. Garden boxes are available to residents who want to grow their own flowers, fruits, vegetables and herbs. For more information or to reserve a box, call 623-773-7436.
