The purpose of the academy is to promote the Community Oriented Policing philosophy through the exchange of information between citizens and law enforcement.
Who Is The Citizens Academy For?
The Peoria Police Department’s Citizens Academy is designed for those who live or work in Peoria, are 18 years of age and older, and who are interested in learning about the department and the work of officers in our city . The academy provides an opportunity for the general public to see inside the everyday responsibilities of our fine men and women in uniform. Whether you are interested in law enforcement as a career, want to learn more about your local police department, or just want the experience of a lifetime, the PPD ‘s Citizens academy is for you!
What Is The Citizens Academy?
The Peoria Police Department’s Citizens Academy is a eight-week course allowing citizens to observe and learn how police officers and the department operate. Instruction is comprehensive, and there is hands-on interaction between participants and officers. The academy experience
promises to give participants an exciting behind the scenes look at the field of law enforcement.
What Will I Learn?
Topics covered during this course include: Gang Awareness, Narcotics Investigation, D.U.I. Investigation, Use of Force, and the Firearms Training Simulator. Along the way, participants will experience what it is like to gather evidence, interview suspects and witnesses, book a prisoner into jail, use a radar gun, and many other law enforcement tasks. Participants will learn what it takes to become a police officer, from the hiring process and the police academy, to using a firearms training simulator and executing high-risk vehicle stops.

Classes run every Wednesday evening from 6 p.m - 9 p.m. (with the exception of March 20 - due to spring break) and most classes are held at the Peoria Police Department Headquarters.

The February 13 - April 10, 2019 class is now full. Those who registered will receive an e-mail letting them know if they were accepted into the class.
