Honor. It is something that is given and something that is earned. The city of Peoria would like your support to help honor the men and women who have served this country. The Senator John McCain Vietnam Memorial Plaza at Rio Vista Park was built to show our respect and appreciation for those who fought, and those who died, in Vietnam.
The centerpiece of the plaza is a 1967 Bell UH-1H "Huey" helicopter (chassis no. 565) that served 3,060 combat hours in Vietnam between 1968-1971. The tail marking of 58318 signifies the number of names on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C. as of May 2017. This memorial aircraft is on extended loan from Light Horse Legacy, a 501(c)3 non-profit that provides aid to veterans through an outreach program.
In its current form, the Vietnam Memorial Plaza lacks defined landscaping, seating and architectural elements that promote comfort and quiet reflection. Based on visitor feedback, this feature is one we have chosen to enhance. We want visitors to be able to spend time with the memorial in a tranquil setting that befits the honor owed to our Vietnam Veterans and Senator McCain. To achieve this, Peoria has designed concept plans that depict the vision and intent of the special space.
The city requests community support to help make this improvement a reality. Our goal is to raise $80k for the enhancements to the memorial plaza. We understand charitable spending is limited and have created a tiered system so we can recognize your valuable support appropriately. As a Tier I or II donor of $20k or $15k, your donation will be recognized on a lasting and indelible marker located at the memorial. As a Tier III donor, any contributions between amount of $5k and 15k, your contribution will be recognized on our city web page and promotional materials created for the Memorial Plaza. All Community Contributors at values between $20 and $5k will be noted on a collective event sign at the 2019 Peoria Veterans Day Celebration to be held at Rio Vista Park and the Peoria Veterans Memorial.
