*All applicants must be either StarGuard or American Red Cross Lifeguard Training/First Aid, and CPR/AED certified at the time of the water test. (Please note: All City of Peoria Lifeguards must be StarGuard certified. Once hired, lifeguards with only American Red Cross certifications must take a StarGuard rollover course.)
How to Apply
- Obtain required certification by taking a StarGuard class.
- Fill out application online, www.peoriaaz.gov/jobs (applications are available now)
Applications are due online by Sunday before the Water Test/Interview.
No late applications will be accepted.
Certifications must be current as of your Water Test/Interview date.
- All applicants must attend one of the City of Peoria Water Tests (a Water Test is the interview).

All applicants must bring: Current Lifeguard certification, Government issued photo ID (high school ID's ok), pocket mask, suit and towel.

The Starfish Aquatics Institute StarGuard Training class is offered to those interested in becoming a certified lifeguard. The class includes certifications in First Aid and American Safety & Health Institute CPR/AED Pro. Participants must attend all classes. Prerequisites: must be at least 15 years old, swim 100 yards head up non-stop (50 yards with guard tube), retrieve 10 lb. weight from the bottom of the pool and tread water for one minute without using hands.

CPR & Water Rescue Skills Practice - This optional course is for those wishing to re-fresh their CPR and water rescue skills prior to taking the City of Peoria's Water Test/Interview. Staff will be on hand to answer any questions and assist with skills. Participants must have already completed their certification courses prior to attending the practice. (This class is NOT a recertification course).
Fee: $20 residents/ $26 non-residents.

The Starfish Swim Instructor Course provides swim instructor candidates the training needed to teach courses the SAI Water Safety Program. Instructor candidates will learn how to help students develop correct stroke technique, develop and understanding of how to teach students at different levels, develop water safety techniques, and learn how to evaluate participants' progress.

This course is a requirement for those wishing to be a City of Peoria Junior Lifeguard during the season, including returning Junior Lifeguards. It provides an introduction to lifeguard responsibilities, swim lesson instruction, and CPR. Participants must have passed Stroke School Gold swim lessons and/or be able to swim 200 yards. Once the class is successfully completed, additional training/volunteer hours are available.
