City of Peoria Closes Recreation Center, Libraries and Community Center
These city facilities will remain closed until further notice.
PEORIA, Ariz. (March 17, 2020) – The city of Peoria has closed Rio Vista Recreation Center, the Peoria Community Center/Community Assistance Resource Center, both Peoria libraries, Peoria Center for the Performing Arts and the West Valley Art Museum.
These changes are in line with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) updated COVID-19 guidelines on social distancing, which encourage Americans to stay home and avoid social gatherings in groups of more than 10 people. These closures are effective Wednesday, March 18 until further notice.
“During this difficult time, the City of Peoria is committed to doing what is best for the health and safety of our residents, our employees and the entire Peoria community,” said Mayor Cathy Carlat. “These changes are directly aligned with current recommendations from the CDC and as new guidelines are established, we will adjust as appropriate.”
There are still opportunities for residents to take advantage of city services. Online access to digital library books, audio books, streaming video and music is available to anyone with a current Peoria library card. For information, visit www.peoriaaz.gov/library. Book drops will remain open Monday through Friday. All late fees will be waived and all due dates will be extended for the period the library is closed.
With 20 miles of hiking and biking trails throughout our city, there are many ways to stay active in Peoria, while maintaining the CDC’s recommendation to minimize social interactions. Check out our trail system at www.peoriaaz.gov/trails.
It is important to note that while neighborhood and community parks have open public spaces that may be accessed by families, park amenities and facilities are closed. For a detailed listing, please visit www.peoriaaz.gov/parks.
While the Rio Vista Recreation Center is closed, all current Rio Vista Membership terms will be extended accordingly.
The City of Peoria will continue to provide real-time assessments to ensure we are acting in alignment with the recommendations of our health care experts and officials, in the best interest of public health and safety.
