Peoria Centennial High School graduate, SPC Tina Halvorsen, is an Ammunition Specialist serving with the Combat Aviation Brigade, 1st Infantry Division deployed in Afghanistan. She wants to keep in touch with her Peoria community. Not just family and friends, but others through a “pen pal” website called Hometown Heroes. The goal of the site is to build direct linkages and relationships between members of the Army’s Combat Aviation Brigade and all of the communities where the soldiers come from.
“Soldiers draw their strength and resilience from the support of their family, their loved ones, and their communities,” said Bob Barrett, City of Peoria mayor. “I hope by sharing this website with our community will provide a simple way for residents to reach out and recognize the contributions and sacrifices our soldiers make in proudly serving our great nation.”
The Hometown Heroes project was developed to build connections between the soldiers of the 1ID Combat Aviation Brigade and the communities they are proud to call home. Visitors are encouraged to view soldiers from their area and send them a positive message. The website interface is a map-based website which shows the hometowns of each of the soldiers stationed with the Division, and allows the public to send messages of support.
