Peoria, Ariz. (April 27, 1999) – In the face of a recent threat of violence at Peoria High School, Mayor John Keegan is offering cash rewards of up to $500 for information that leads to confiscation of weapons on school grounds, and the conviction of the individuals responsible. Mayor Keegan will provide details about the program at a news conference scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 28 at Peoria City Hall. State Superintendent of Public Instruction Lisa Graham-Keegan will join Mayor Keegan at the news conference.

Peoria police were advised on Saturday, April 24 that an individual in an Internet "chat room" was warning that Peoria High School would be the scene of violence on Friday, April 30. Police are currently attempting to track down the source of the threatening statements.

"These threats of violence are being taken with the utmost seriousness, especially as we still mourn the national tragedy that took place in Colorado," said Mayor Keegan. "Providing our children a safe and sane place to learn is our top priority. I am asking school kids to ‘help us help you’, by letting us know when there are weapons on school grounds."

Peoria students are being asked to report any weapons, from knives and batons to explosives and automatic weapons, by calling a 24-hour police hotline at 412-7045. Calls can be made anonymously. Rewards from $25 to $500, based on the type of weapons confiscated and conviction of the individuals involved will be provided from Mayor Keegan’s district funds.

"Bringing any kind of weapon on school property is a criminal act, and we want to stop this criminal behavior," said Mayor Keegan.
