Practice Fireworks Safety for 4th of July
As Independence Day nears, the Peoria Fire-Medical Department warns residents to be careful around fireworks. Consumer fireworks can be purchased and used until July 6. However, there are several limitations on where fireworks can be used within Peoria. Fireworks cannot be used on city property, including parks, city streets and city sidewalks. They also cannot be used on state land or on school property, unless a permit has been issued. Fireworks such as spinners and fountains cannot be sold to anyone under the age of 16; however, novelty items such as poppers and sparklers can be used by any age group.
Fireworks during 4th of July are responsible for many burn injuries because of premature detonation or misuse. The majority of firework burn injuries involve children, causing vision impairment and disfiguring scars. Sparklers are the biggest culprit, most having a tip temperature reaching 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit. Parent supervision is key when allowing children near fireworks. Rather than using fireworks at home, residents are encouraged to enjoy the fireworks show at the All-American Festival at the Peoria Sports Complex on July 4th.
