CITY OF PEORIA, ARIZONA LIBRARY BOARD MEETING Main Library January 10, 2011 A regular meeting of the Library Board of the City of Peoria, Arizona was convened in open and public session at the Main Library, 8463 West Monroe, at 7:00 p.m. Members Present: Barry Spiegel, James T. Abraham, Joan Leone, Jack McCleary, Steve Poe and Andrea Schultz Members Absent: Carla Carlson Member Emeritus: 0 Other Municipal Officials Present: David Hunenberg, Library Manager; Heather Cammarata, Executive Assistant Audience: 0 Note: The order in which the items appear in the minutes is not necessarily the order in which they were discussed at the meeting. CONSENT AGENDA: 1C MINUTES: Steve Poe made a motion to approve the items on consent agenda including the meeting minutes of the November 9, 2010 regular meeting. Jack McCleary seconded the motion, and, upon vote, the motion carried unanimously. NEW BUSINESS: 2R NEW BOARD MEMBER INTRODUCTION: New board member Carla Carlson was not able to attend the meeting. This item was skipped. 3R CENTENNIAL PLAZA DECADES WALK: David Hunenberg reminded the board that any suggestions to add to the Decades Walk timeline for Centennial Plaza need to be submitted by January 28, 2011. The board briefly discussed ideas that individual members had discovered during their research. No action was taken. 4R BRAVO PEORIA: David Hunenberg gave a brief summary of the vendors and activities scheduled for the Bravo Peoria! event to take place at Sunrise Mountain Library on Saturday, March 12, 2011 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The event will have activities for all ages. No action was taken. 5R SUMMER READING PROGRAMS 2011: David Hunenberg indicated that the themes for the 2011 summer reading programs have been determined. The adult program is “Novel Destination”, the teen program is “You are Here”, and the children’s program is “Extra, Extra Read Your Way to the Ballpark.” Program details are in progress. No action was taken. CALL TO THE PUBLIC: None Reports from Staff: 1. Workforce Connection David Hunenberg gave a brief update on the success of the Workforce Connection. Staff is working on creating additional signage and increasing publicity to further promote participation in the program. 2. Sunrise Mountain Library Art Project David Hunenberg indicated that the construction of Be Water sculpture is on schedule. Staff is working to tie the dedication in to Bravo Peoria possibly at 8:30 a.m. 3. Grants Update David Hunenberg shared that staff has been spending the funds received from the LSTA Grant (Library Services and Technology Act) on kid friendly items for the children’s area at Sunrise Mountain Library. 4. Technology Update David Hunenberg informed the Board that staff is looking into the possibility of purchasing e-readers for patrons to check out as an opportunity to promote this popular reading option. Additionally, the Polaris acquisitions module has been completely implemented. The next major technology item will be the use of Unique collection agency which will help the library recover unreturned materials.
