Crack Sealing Asphalt Streets
Why do pavements crack?

Following initial construction, pavement begins the process of oxidation. Over time, it becomes dry, brittle, more rigid, and less flexible. The aggregate starts wearing away, causing cracks. Some small cracks can start to show in the first year of new pavement. The City of Peoria provides a quality maintenance program to extend the life cycle of asphalt 25-30 years and even up to 40 years saving taxpayer’s money while providing a safe and efficient roadways.
What is crack seal?
Crack seal is a material made of a petroleum-based premix with rubber and joint sealant. It does not resurface the street, it is used for filling and sealing cracks. The sealant is applied when hot, and then it cools to form a long-lasting, resilient seal which is flexible and expandable in varying pavement temperatures.
Why crack seal?
Crack seal is a treatment to maintain and extend the life cycle of the roadway. Research shows that crack sealing programs are cost effective in extending the life of pavement, as opposed to the cost of extensive pavement repairs for streets left unsealed. Crack sealing assists in the prevention of water between the layers of asphalt and sub-grade, thus preventing premature pavement failures, deterioration, and potholes.
When do streets receive crack seal?

The City of Peoria utilizes a pavement management program software to assist in prioritizing roadways for crack seal and surface treatments. It requires us to measure asphalt distresses, their severity and recommends the most efficient and cost effective surface treatments. City staff evaluates and updates a multi-year plan annually. Each year we crack seal on those streets with cracks 1/4’’ inch wide or wider that are scheduled for a surface treatment then continue to other roads as needed and as funding allows.
What is the City of Peoria budget for Crack Seal?
The City of Peoria began its crack sealing program in 1998 and continue each year to seal as many cracks possible with the budget provided. The City spent its crack sealing budget of approximately $325,000.
It is estimated that 1,500,000 linear feet of cracks have
been filled this fiscal year, covering approximately 54.28 linear miles of roadway as seen in the graph.
