Redistricting Overview
The City of Peoria is required to adjust its district boundaries following the decennial and mid decennial census data collection process for the purposes of providing substantially equal population in each district within the city allowing for generally a 10% variance or less.
Redistricting is based on the total population of the City. The last City of Peoria district lines were drawn following the 2000 Census when the City’s population was determined to be 108,364. The City’s 2008 population was estimated at 155,560.
District Criteria
The following are considerations when determining district lines:
- Contiguity; districts cannot be separated, but can be connected by only rights-of-way.
- Follow natural and artificial boundaries, such as State Roadways, Parkways and Rivers.
- Keep communities of interest together
- Follow boundaries of other political subdivisions and county precinct lines.
Redistricting decisions must protect the ability of recognized minority voters to influence the election process (In Arizona, this is primarily Latino).
