Why Recycle?

The City of Peoria collects about 75,000 tons of solid waste each year and delivers it to local landfills. Much of this waste can be diverted from landfills and recycled. By recycling, citizens save money and make a positive impact on their environment. Here’s how:

  • Recyclable materials collected at city drop-off sites are taken to a processing facility where they are sold for market rate. The money earned from sales of recyclable materials are then put back into the city’s recycling program fund to help keep costs low.
  • Recycling preserves natural resources. Use of recycled material in manufacturing processes reduces the demand for virgin materials – for example, making paper with recycled material uses fewer trees than paper that does not contain recycled material.

  • Studies also show that less energy is needed to manufacture products from recovered materials than from virgin materials – in fact, manufacturing products from recycled materials can reduce energy required in the process by as much as 94%.
