JOB
OBJECTIVES
Perform skilled maintenance and repair of a wide
variety of small-motorized equipment including mowers,
weeding machines, pumps and generators.
DISTINGUISHING
CHARACTERISTICS
This is an
entry-level job classification in the Mechanic series.
SUPERVISION
RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives general supervision from supervisory or
management staff. Receives
technical and functional supervision from the higher level
maintenance staff. Exercises
no supervision.
POSITION
ACCOUNTABILITIES - May include, but are not limited to,
the following:
Maintain, troubleshoot and repair a variety of small
equipment engines including mowers, weeding machines,
pumps, and generators, small
sweepers and blowers, golf carts, and electric
mowers. Inspect,
diagnose, and locate mechanical malfunctions on a variety
of small equipment engines; overhaul engines; replace or
repair faulty parts. Remove
and replace wheels, tires and tubes; rotate tires to
insure proper wear, as required.
Grease and lubricate small engine equipment;
service batteries and other parts.
Perform hydrostatic repairs to movers and other
equipment; inspect mower blades for proper wear and
alignment. Inspect
equipment and vehicles for loose or worn parts, hydraulic
leaks and exhaust leaks; bring needed repairs to the
attention of appropriate personnel.
Steam cleans equipment and related mechanical
parts. Assist
vehicle maintenance personnel on complex tasks or heavy
bulk assignments; perform minor repairs/replacement of
parts on automotive equipment, and minor machine shop
duties under direct supervision.
Pick up and deliver equipment where needed.
Operate hoist and forklift trucks for loading and
unloading equipment. Perform
related duties, as assigned.
CRITICAL
SKILLS/EXPERTISE – needed to complete position
accountabilities
Knowledge
of:
Tools, equipment, materials, methods, and procedures
used in the overhaul, repair, and adjustment of small
engine equipment. Operation
and care of two and four cycle internal combustion
engines. Methods,
materials, and equipment used in mower blade adjustments
and blade sharpening.
Principals and practices in the operation of
automotive and small equipment.
Safe work practices.
Ability to:
Perform
small equipment repair and maintenance work including
the troubleshooting of equipment for both major and
minor repairs. Accurately
determine mechanical repair needs and estimate the cost
and time of repairs.
Use a variety of tools, equipment, and cleaning
materials with skill.
Maintain a variety of shop and repair records.
Experience and Training
Any combination of
experience and training that would likely provide the
required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.
A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities
would be:
Experience
One
year performing skilled repairs and servicing of small
engine equipment is preferred.
Training
Equivalent
to the completion of the twelfth grade.
Additional specialized training in the care and
maintenance of small engines, park maintenance equipment,
and internal combustion engines is desirable.

Requirements:
Physical Requirements
Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or
in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in
excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Work Environment
Position
is subject to noise and/or vibration.
Position is subject to hazards:
Proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical
current, exposure to chemicals, etc.
Position is subject to atmospheric conditions:
Fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, or poor
ventilation.
License or Certificate
Possession of, or ability to obtain a valid Arizona commercial driver’s
license, Class “B”
within 6 months from the date of hire.
