JOB OBJECTIVES
Make major mechanical repairs to
automotive, diesel, and other power-driven heavy
equipment; maintain and service complex pieces of
equipment.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the advanced journey level
class in the Mechanic series. Positions at this level are
distinguished from other classes within the series by the
complexity of duties assigned. Employees perform the most
difficult and responsible types of duties assigned to
classes within this series, including working on diesel
equipment and vehicles and providing lead supervision on
occasion. Employees at this level are required to be fully
trained in all procedures related to assigned area of
responsibility.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receive general supervision from the
Fleet Supervisor or Fleet Manager. Primary supervision is
received from the Mechanic Supervisor/Team Leader.
May exercise technical and functional
supervision over Mechanics.
POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES - May
include, but are not limited to, the following:
Inspect, diagnose, and locate complex
mechanical difficulties in City Automobiles, trucks, and a
variety of diesel and gasoline-powered maintenance and
construction equipment. Determine extent of necessary
repairs; estimate the cost and time for repairs; replace
and repair faulty or damaged parts; determine repairs
beyond the shop capabilities. Overhaul, repair, and adjust
engines, transmissions, differentials, and clutches on
heavy and diesel equipment. Replace or repair faulty
parts, including wheel bearings, clutches, oil seals,
shock absorbers, exhaust systems, steering mechanisms, and
related parts and equipment. Repair and replace such
components as generators, distributors, relays, lights,
and switches. Maintain work, time, and material records.
Perform difficult manual labor, including lifting heavy
weights, stooping, bending, and twisting. Some positions
may be required to perform tune-up and emission testing.
Assist lower level mechanics in the performance of major
mechanical repairs as assigned. Maintain shop cleanliness;
repair shop equipment as necessary. Clean vehicles and
equipment. Tune up engines, replace ignition parts, and
clean and adjust carburetors. Perform related duties, as
assigned.
CRITICAL SKILLS/EXPERTISE - needed to

Knowledge of:
Tools, equipment, and procedures used
in the overhaul, repair, and adjustment of gas and
diesel-powered equipment. Operating and repair
characteristics of a full range of City-owned equipment.
Operation and care of internal combustion engines.
Operation and care of diesel equipment. Safe work
practices.
Ability to:
Manage through teams. Embrace
consultative decision-making. Serve teams and
individuals as your customers. Become skilled in team
building and team processes. Use teams to set goals,
make plans, and implement change. Perform major
mechanical work on equipment and vehicles. Perform a
full range of mechanical work, including the
troubleshooting of equipment for both major and minor
repairs. Accurately determine mechanical repair needs
and estimate the cost and time of repairs. Lift heavy
objects and perform difficult manual labor.
Experience and Training:
Any combination of experience and
training that would likely provide the required knowledge
and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the
knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience:
Two years of experience performing
skilled mechanic work in the servicing and repair of
automobiles and heavy equipment.
Training:
Equivalent to the completion of the
twelfth grade including specialized training in the
repair and maintenance of pumps, valves, and fire
apparatus.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Physical Requirements:
Exerting up to 100 pounds of force
occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force
frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly
to move objects. Must be able to remain in a standing
position for extended periods of time. Lift arms above
shoulder level to install and remove transmission
components. Bend or stoop repeatedly over time to check
air pressure in tires and other tasks. Manipulate tools
in the areas of limited space. Works safely without
presenting direct threat to self and others.
Work Environment:
Position is subject to noise and/or
vibration. Position is subject to hazards: Proximity to
moving mechanical parts, electrical current, exposure to
chemicals, etc. Position is subject to atmospheric
conditions: Fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, or poor
ventilation. Subject to both environmental conditions,
activities occur inside and outside.
License or Certificate:
Possession of, or ability to obtain,
an appropriate, valid Arizona commercial driver’s
license. Possession of, or ability to obtain, an
appropriate, valid air conditioning license for
automotive air conditioning work/repair. ASE Master
Certification desired or ability to obtain.
Required Equipment:
The Senior Mechanic must possess, or
obtain and maintain, a complete set of hand tools for
use in completing assigned duties.
