Inspector

 

JOB OBJECTIVES

Inspect workmanship and materials used in a variety of public works projects; and, ensure conformance with plans, specifications, and departmental regulations.  Assists with all activities in the Streets Division.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receive general supervision from public works supervisory or management personnel.  Exercise no supervision.

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES - May include, but are not limited to, the following:

Review plans and specifications of assigned project with construction supervisor; attend pre-construction conferences.  Check for construction permits; inspect materials for identification as conforming to specifications.  Inspect chip seal and slurry seal and various other surface treatment maintenance techniques.  Attend walkthroughs on construction projects; prepare a list of recommended corrections and repairs for sidewalks, curbs, gutters, asphalt, street lighting, signage and street or parking lot striping.  Provide a cost estimate for special projects.  Indicate location of various as-builts on plans. Prepare a variety of activity records and reports such as work orders, inspection, daily activity report, and other computer or manual reports as required.   Assist with computer software for the pavement maintenance management program as assigned by supervisory of management staff.  Assist with all pavement maintenance activities as assigned.  Oversee the examination of materials for analysis by laboratories.  Collect paperwork and verify quantities of services provided by contractors and recommend approval for payment.  Field verify materials used and work performed; prepare necessary reports for progress payments.  Confer with property owners, utility companies and other City departments, regarding project schedule, hazards and inconvenience.  Position accountabilities: schedule service interruptions with the least interference and inconvenience to properties, and the general public.  Perform related duties, as assigned.

CRITICAL SKILLS/EXPERTISE ‑ needed to complete position accountabilities

Knowledge of:

Principles, methods, materials, equipment, and safety hazards of construction inspection.  Defects and faults in construction.  Materials sampling and estimating procedures.  Applicable laws, regulations, codes, and departmental policies governing the construction of assigned projects.

Ability to:

Understand and interpret engineering plans and specifications and prepare accurate public works records. 

Detect and locate faulty materials and workmanship and determine the stage of construction during which defects are most easily found and remedied.  Understand and perform survey work.

Experience and Training:

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience:

One year of increasingly responsible experience performing a variety of technical engineering work, including some construction inspection experience.

Training:

Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade, supplemented by specialized training in mathematics, building safety and construction technology, civil engineering or a related field.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Physical Requirements:

Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Work Environment:

Position is subject to outside environmental conditions. No effective protection from weather.  Position may be subject to extreme heat or cold for periods of up to 10 hours.  Position is subject to hazards.  Proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, exposure to chemicals.

License or Certificate:

Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid Arizona commercial driver’s     license.
