Engineering Technician

 

JOB OBJECTIVES

Perform a full range of technical engineering support activities including providing information to contractors, developers and the general public; participate in computer-aided drafting, design and surveying.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is the advanced journey level class in the Technical Engineering series. Incumbents of this class may provide supervision to lower level technical engineering staff in addition to performing full range of field and office engineering work requiring previous specialized experience. Duties are performed under general supervision and guidance of the Senior Engineering Technician.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receive direction from the Senior Engineering Technician, higher level engineering staff or from other supervisory or management staff. Exercises functional and technical supervision over lower level technical staff.

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES - May include, but are not limited to, the following:

Research drawing files for location of water and sewer lines, ensure the accuracy of these drawings and oversee placement on quarter section map; research engineering projects and improvements. Perform computer drafting projects to ensure compliance with project requirements. Assist in the training of personnel in computer-aided drafting. Provide technical assistance to the public, job superintendents, design engineers, developers and contractors on off-site improvements, inspections, and permit requirements. Participate in drafting projects and transfer of field survey data to computer programs, and preparation of quarter section maps using computer software; complete work tasks and assist in the review of completed projects. Prepare computer drawings to support Council Communications. Research FIRM and floodplain maps for flood zone requirements. Supervise and participate in surveying as required to support City projects; ensure accuracy of survey data. Perform offsite inspections on City projects to ensure compliance with contract specifications as required. Assist in preparation of operating budget for Technical Support Services section. Assist municipal engineers with revision of civil plans and specifications for water, sewer, and paving projects. Write legal descriptions as required. Assist in design of off-site requirements for City projects. Assist Senior Engineer Technician and/or Civil Engineer with FEMA community rating system procedures and applications. Perform related duties, as assigned.

CRITICAL SKILLS/EXPERTISE - needed to complete position accountabilities

Knowledge of:

Surveying techniques and practices. Trigonometry, analytic geometry, algebra, and survey calculations. Computer aided drafting. Engineering maps, records, legal descriptions, and County recording procedures. Principles and practices of supervision, training, and performance. Perform difficult technical engineering work. Geographic Information Systems.

Ability to:

Read and interpret maps and plans. Prepare calculations and computations of cost estimates, pay estimates, and field surveys. Develop work schedules, assign tasks, and review completed assignments. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Experience and Training:

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience:

Three years of increasingly responsible experience performing a variety of technical engineering work related to the area of assignment.

Training:

Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade, supplemented by specialized training in mathematics, surveying, civil engineering, or related field.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Physical Requirements:

Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for sedentary work.
