GENERAL PURPOSE
Investigates and adjusts third party bodily injury and
property damage claims, processes subrogation claims,
writes reports and performs other related tasks.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
A position at this level is distinguished from the
Specialist level positions by the level of responsibility
assumed and the complexity of duties assigned. Work is
reviewed through work papers, reports and conferences with
assigned Deputy City Attorneys; Senior Deputy City
Attorney or City Attorney. An employee in this
classification receives functional supervision from the
Law Office Administrator.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The duties listed below are intended only as

Receives and evaluates claims used to determine City
liability; conducts incident investigations. Adjusts
claims, including evaluation of injuries, medical reports,
bills, estimates, and related facts. Gives and receives
information requiring knowledge of City procedures
regarding claims administration. Confers with City legal
counsel in litigation against the City; assembles
necessary documents, evidence and exhibits. Works with
consultants and others to prepare bid specifications for
contract claims adjusting and insurance procurement.
Ensures efficient processing, monitoring, and filing of
claims, including liability and subrogation claims;
compiles reports of claim expenses and claims status.
Works with consultants, attorneys, medical personnel and
claims adjusters contracted by the City to review general
liability and other claims and to gain information for
claims management. Locates, directs and recommends repairs
and corrections of potential liability hazards to the
City. Performs related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Principles, practices, processes and laws related to
public entity insurance and general liability in the
State of Arizona; federal, state and local laws and
regulations pertaining to risk management; claim
adjustment, claim investigation and claim management;
municipal operations, facilities and risk management
activities. Operates a Personal Computer with background
in database operation and maintenance.
Ability to:
Understand principles of claims management, tort
liability as relating to auto/general liability claims;
interpret risk management and claims prevention
principles, laws and procedures; accurately maintain
records and files and prepare reports; analyze data and
draw logical conclusions; operate a computer and utilize
word processing, database and spreadsheet software;
establish and maintain cooperative working relationships
with those encountered in the course of the work.
Training and Experience:
A typical way of obtaining the knowledge, skills and
abilities outlined above is graduation from an
accredited college with an Bachelor’s degree in public
administration, business administration, insurance, or
related field and one year of experience in property or
liability claims handling; or an equivalent combination
of training and experience.
Licenses; Certificates: Special Requirements:
Requires a valid Arizona driver’s license. Ability
to become certified as an Arizona Insurance Adjuster
within two years following employment.
