Transit Operator


GENERAL PURPOSE

Safely and efficiently operate transit vehicles for the purpose of transporting passengers.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receive general supervision from the Transit Operations Supervisor. Exercise no supervision.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to this class.

• Provides safe and efficient vehicle operations for the purpose of transporting passengers. Provide quality customer service to the general public
• Completes daily Pre-Trip and Post-Trip vehicle inspections, interior cleaning and vehicle re-fueling
• Assists passengers, including seniors and disabled, in boarding and exiting the vehicle as necessary. Operates wheelchair lift equipment for passengers using mobility devices and/or those unable to use the stairs
• Collects and records pre-established transit fares
• Provides general information to public regarding Dial-A-Ride services. Logs all stops on daily route manifest, completes incident and accident reports, Daily Vehicle Inspection reports and reports vehicle malfunctions
• Assists in training of new personnel on equipment operations and procedures as needed. Occasionally may assist support staff as needed
• Performs other duties as required or assigned
• Maintains clear and complete records and logs
• Completes required forms and written reports related to transit vehicle operations
• Determines the most efficient route to travel from one location to another and provide estimated times of arrival
• Operates a two-way radio system and utilize standard 10-codes
• Effectively responds to emergencies on and near the vehicle

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
High School diploma or G.E.D. equivalent; and one (1) year experience providing customer care and/or customer service to the general public; or an equivalent combination of education, training or work experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position. Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Arizona Commercial Driver’s license (CDL), with a passenger endorsement must be obtained within six (6) weeks of hire. Demonstrated proficiency in the operation of transit vehicles.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

One to two years of passenger transport / transit driving experience and some knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances, rules, defensive driving techniques and driving courtesies, and ability to follow oral and written instruction; good public relations and interpersonal skills including the ability to serve the general public; exercising courtesy and tact at all times. Ability to learn the general geographic layout of Peoria’s transit service area.

Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this class, employees regularly are required to use hands repetitively to finger, handle, feel or operate equipment; climb stairs, sit, reach, twist, bend, pull, push, kneel and lift and exert up to 75 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently to move mobility devices; involves sitting for prolonged periods of time. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, use of both eyes, ability to adjust focus and to distinguish basic colors and/or shades. Applicants will be required to undergo drug testing prior to employment and will be subject to further drug and alcohol testing throughout their period of employment in accordance with the City of Peoria Substance Abuse policy.

Mental Demands:
While performing the duties of this class, employees regularly are required to uses oral and written communication skills; read and interpret data, information and documents; analyze and solve problems; interact with the general public, public agencies, employees and others who may be encountered during the course of work.
