Transit Dispatcher
GENERAL PURPOSE
Performs a variety of jobs related to the scheduling and
dispatching of bus rides / trips for the Peoria Transit
program.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receive general supervision from the Transit Operations
Supervisor and specific direction of the Senior Transit
Dispatcher. Exercise no supervision.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The duties listed below are intended only as
illustrations of the various types of work that may be
performed. The omission of specific statements of duties
does not exclude them from the position if the work is
similar, related or a logical assignment to this class.
• Receives telephone reservations from customers and
input such reservations in the computer dispatch system
• Schedules trips using the most efficient means
• Prepares and prints operators’ daily manifest
• Maintains telephone and fax communications with
neighboring transit agencies regarding passenger
transfers and information sharing
• Maintains regular contact /communications with vehicle
operators
• Assists with changes in operators’ manifest
(cancellations, additions, changes) to effectively
maintain timely transit service
• Performs a variety of general support duties related
to dispatching activities, including typing, filing,
cash handling and other clerical tasks
• Assures operators daily inspection/condition reports
are completed by operator and available for review
• Assists in preparing end of month reports
• Utilizes computerized dispatch system to the full
potential in order to maximize the use of vehicles to
provide trips in the most efficient and timely manner
• Maintains satisfactory/effective working relationships
working with clientele, assisting with problems and
concerns regarding requested service
• Explains policies and procedures
• May act in capacity as a vehicle operator as necessary
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
High School diploma or G.E.D. equivalent and two years
of general clerical experience. Good public relations
and interpersonal skills including the ability to serve
the general public; exercising courtesy and tact at all
times. Learn the general geographic layout of Peoria’s
transit service area. Good understanding of operational
characteristics of computers and dispatch equipment. Any
combination of experience and training that would likely
provide the required knowledge and abilities is
qualifying. Applicants will be required to undergo drug
testing prior to employment and will be subject to
further drug and alcohol testing throughout their period
of employment in accordance with the City of Peoria
Substance Abuse policy.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Prior experience in dispatch or other communications;
knowledge of operations, services, policies, traffic
laws, ordinances, rules, defensive driving techniques
and driving courtesies.

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this class, employees are
regularly required to sit; talk or hear, in person and
by telephone, use hands repetitively to handle, feel or
operate equipment, computers and other standard office
equipment; and to reach with hands and/or arms and to
occasionally exert up to 10 pounds of force and/or
negligible amount of force frequently to move objects;
involves sitting for prolonged periods of time.
Mental Demands
While performing the duties of this class, employees are
regularly required to use oral and written communication
skills; read and interpret data, information and
documents; analyze and solve problems; interact with the
general public, public agencies, employees, and others
who may encountered during the course of work.
WORK ENVIRONMENT

The employee spends substantial time in an indoor
environment working closely with others. Occasional
outdoor environment if needed to operate a vehicle.
