Street Maintenance Worker
GENERAL PURPOSE
Perform a variety of semi-skilled tasks in the
maintenance and repair of City streets.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the entry/journey level class in the Maintenance
Worker class series. Incumbents assigned to this class
initially perform routine and closely related duties
under close supervision. However, as experience is
acquired, they are expected to work independently
exercising judgment and initiative. This position may
require work on weekends or nights in emergencies or on
standby status (evenings and weekends).
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receive general supervision from Department supervisory
and management personnel. Receive technical or
functional supervision from higher level field
maintenance staff. Exercise no supervision.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Street Maintenance
Performs street maintenance duties; operates
construction and maintenance equipment; such as, trucks,
tractors, loaders, rollers, and radiant heating
equipment for a variety of construction and maintenance
operations involving streets, sidewalks, and gutters
Operates trucks and equipment common to street
maintenance, such as hot asphalt application, raking,
rolling, jackhammer and other hydraulic and small tool
applications
Maintains and repairs streets, parking lots, curbs,
gutters, and sidewalks. Uses concrete cutting and
breaking equipment; operates a jackhammer; pours and
finishes concrete; constructs concrete forms and
performs rough carpentry work
Sets up traffic safety devices; such as cones, signs,
and barricades as necessary
Performs emergency street sewer, storm drain, or other
public service maintenance work as required.
Utilizes proper safety precautions related to all work
performed. Some positions may require the addition of
other position accountabilities
Performs routine preventive maintenance on equipment
as assigned
Performs related duties, as assigned
Signing and Striping
Performs street maintenance duties; operates
construction and maintenance equipment; such as trucks,
tractors, loaders, and street sign and striping
equipment
Applies traffic paint directional markings, which
includes all roadway and some parking lot striping. This
may include stenciling and plastics applications
Repairs, replaces, and add new signs and posts as
required. Fabricates new signs as required, i.e.
regulatory, guide, warning, street name, construction
and other computer generated signs. Maintains and
fabricate street barricades for entire section.
Sets up traffic safety devices; such as cones, signs,
and barricades as necessary
Utilizes proper safety precautions related to all work
performed. Some positions may require the addition of
other position accountabilities.
Performs routine preventive maintenance on equipment
as assigned
Performs related duties, as assigned
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
High School Diploma or GED and one year of experience
performing street maintenance and repair work OR roadway
and parking lot striping and fabrication or repair of
new or existing street regulatory signage. Possession
of, or the ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid
Arizona Class A Commercial Drivers License, with
tanker endorsement within 3 months of hire.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Valid Arizona Class A Commercial Drivers License,
with Tanker Endorsement. Knowledge of the methods,
techniques, and procedures related to street maintenance
and/or signing and striping; purposes and uses of a
variety of vehicles, equipment, power and hand tools,
including motorized, pneumatic, and hydraulic equipment.

While performing the duties of this job, employees are
required to sit; talk or hear; use hands to finger,
handle, feel objects or controls; and to reach with
hands and arms and to exert in excess of 100 pounds of
force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of
force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force
constantly to move objects. Specific vision abilities
required by this job include close vision, color vision,
and the ability to adjust focus.
Mental Demands
While performing the duties of this class, the incumbent
is required to use oral communication skills; read and
interpret data and information and analyze and solve
problems.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work environment characteristics described here are

The employee usually works in outside environmental
conditions: No effective protection from weather.
Position may be subject to extreme heat or cold for
periods of more than one hour. Position is subject to

current, exposure to chemicals, etc. Position is subject
to atmospheric conditions: Fumes, odors, dusts, mists,
gasses, or poor ventilations.
