Maintenance Worker
GENERAL PURPOSE
Serves as a lead worker over a small crew of Maintenance
Workers; operate a variety of equipment, involving
construction and maintenance activities; and, performs a
variety of skilled tasks in the maintenance and
operations of City parks, athletic fields, retention
basins and right-of-way areas.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the advanced journey level class in the
Maintenance Worker class series. Positions in this class
are distinguished from those in the Maintenance Worker
class by the frequent performance of the most complex
and difficult field maintenance duties, including lead
supervisory responsibilities, guiding, directing and
scheduling assignments.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives general supervision from Department supervisory
and management personnel. Exercise functional and
technical supervision over assigned maintenance
personnel.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The duties listed below are intended only as
illustrations of the various types of work that may be
performed. The omission of specific statements of duties
does not exclude them from the position if the work is
similar, related or a logical assignment to this class.
• Acts as lead worker over other maintenance personnel
on a daily basis; assists the supervisor in scheduling,
assigning, training, and evaluating maintenance services
and staff
• Operates a variety of hand and power tools in
landscape maintenance work such as chain saws, weed
eaters, blowers etc, and assists in routine maintenance
of such equipment
• Performs a variety of duties in the maintenance and
installation of the City's irrigation and back flow
prevention system
• Operates a variety of equipment, including stump
grinder, sod cutters, limb chipper, backhoe, mowers,
tractors, trencher, vehicles, boom truck, skid loader
and various other maintenance equipment
• Maintains related facilities; cleans restrooms and
picks up litter in maintenance areas
• Establishes irrigation schedules, both flood
irrigation and standard sprinkler systems and oversees
water conservation practices on lawn and landscape areas
• Manages schedules for mowing, weed management and
abatement, manages trimming and pruning practices,
oversees lawn and turf renovations, fertilizes, aerates
and oversees the installation of trees, shrubs and
flowers
• Applies herbicides, fungicides, and pesticides safely;
maintains records of fertilizers and chemicals used
• Maintains playground equipment including assessment of
safety, wear, and needed repairs, and maintains accurate
records of routine safety inspections
• Operates personal computers and software related to
job accountabilities, (i.e., MS Outlook e-mail, MS Word,
MS Excel, Aladdin/Hansen, etc.)
• Reads and interprets basic maps, construction
documents and blueprints
• Works safely and adheres to principles of safety when
working near traffic or in other hazardous environments
• Performs difficult manual labor, including lifting
heavy weights, stooping, bending, and twisting
• Assists in the requisition and purchase of materials
and supplies
• Provides input for annual budget and oversees
expenditures for the year for the assigned program.
• Performs related duties, as assigned
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
High School Diploma or equivalent and two years of
experience performing maintenance duties comparable to
those of a Maintenance Worker in the City of Peoria.
REQUIRE LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES
The position requires the possession of, or ability to
obtain, within the first 12 months of employment,
Backflow Prevention Certification and the Certified
Playground Safety Inspector Certification. Additionally,
a Valid Arizona Pesticide Applicator’s License will be
required within the first six months. Must possess a
Class D Arizona driver’s license and maintain throughout
the employment duration.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Associate’s degree in a related field. Three to five
years experience performing maintenance related duties,
while demonstrating increased levels of supervisory
responsibility. Efficiently utilize Microsoft programs
as a means of communication, creating reports and
documentation. Knowledge of the techniques for
estimating job requirements in terms of manpower, time,
materials, and equipment. Operating characteristics,
methods, tools and techniques of construction and
maintenance equipment, including backhoes, loaders,
rollers, boom trucks, chippers, a variety of vehicles,
power tools, and hand tools; including pneumatic, and
hydraulic equipment. Playground equipment installation,
repair, and safety requirements. Hazards associated with
the work and proper safety precautions. Techniques and
methods of irrigation system installation and
maintenance. Procedures and standards involved in
landscaping City property. Methods, procedures, and
techniques related to athletic field preparation,
maintenance, and lay out. Properties of herbicides and
insecticides, construction materials, paints, and a
variety of other materials used in maintenance work.
Standard and complex procedures and methods used in
parks, right-of-way, and athletic field maintenance.
Some positions may require experience with operating
systems, chemical balance, safety related to the
operation of municipal pools, as well as methods,
procedure, and techniques related to municipal swimming
pool maintenance.

Physical Requirements
While performing the duties of this class, employees
regularly are required to talk or hear, in person and by
telephone, use hands repetitively to finger, handle,
feel or operate testing equipment, computers and other
standard office equipment; and reach with hands or arms.
Employees are required to walk, kneel, stoop, climb and
stand and to exert up to 100 pounds of force
occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force
frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly
to move objects. Specific vision abilities required by
this job include close vision, use of both eyes, ability
to adjust focus and to distinguish basic colors and/or
shades.
Mental Demands
While performing the duties of this class, employees
regularly are required to use oral and written
communication skills; read and interpret data,
information and documents; analyze and solve problems;
interact with the general public, contractors, vendors,
public agencies, employees and others who may be
encountered during the course of work.

Work Environment:
Position is subject to hazards: proximity to moving
mechanical parts, electrical current, exposure to
chemicals, etc. Position is subject to atmospheric

vibration. Position is required to wear respirator to
complete a portion of its position accountabilities.
