Senior Transit Operator
GENERAL PURPOSE
The purpose of this position in addition to the normal
duties of a Transit Vehicle Operator is to support the
supervisor in organizing, monitoring, and training Transit
Vehicle Operators in support of daily operations. The Senior
Transit Vehicle Operator assumes full supervisory authority
over Transit Vehicle Operators when the Supervisor is
unavailable and as the supervisor assigns.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receive general supervision from the Transit Operations
Supervisor. Exercise supervision over Transit Vehicle
Operators.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations

• Provides leadership in developing and maintaining high
performance standards
• Demonstrates an ability to be sensitive to the needs of
clients while enforcing transit policies and procedures
• Checks for condition and cleanliness of transit vehicles
• Performs observed ride checks and unobserved road checks
to ensure customer service, on-time performance and safety
are maintained at the highest possible levels
• Assists vehicle operators with day to day operational
issues
• Assists vehicle operators with general performance of
duties
• Assists supervisor to ensure operators are following
company policies and procedures in the provision of daily
service
• Participates and conducts safety activities and training;
Interacts with vehicle maintenance staff on equipment
repairs and maintenance
• Assists vehicle operators with complaints and problems
• Assists supervisor with training programs regarding the
operations of all types of transit equipment and safe
operating practices
• Assists in conducting on scene accident investigations and
accident prevention training
• Conducts staff training, retraining and corrective
training as directed by supervisor
• Assists vehicle operators in any way possible to insure
they have every opportunity for succeed in the performance
of their duties
• Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations,
streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and
jointly to provide quality service and customer service
• Participates in interviews for transit employees as
requested
• Counsels Transit Vehicle Operators
• Testifies at discipline related hearings as necessary
• Attends and satisfactorily completes additional
specialized training as required by the Transit Division
• Adheres to City of Peoria and departmental policies and
procedures
• Works cooperatively with other division employees and the
general public
• Observes or monitors people's behavior to determine
compliance with prescribed operating or safety standards
• Communicates appropriately both verbally and in writing
• Performs other duties as required or assigned
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
High School Diploma or GED equivalent and three years of
experience as a Transit Vehicle Operator. One (1) year
experience providing customer care and/or customer service
to the general public; or an equivalent combination of
education, training or work experience which demonstrates
the ability to perform the duties of the position.
Possession of a valid Arizona Commercial Driver's license (CDL),
with a Passenger endorsement.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
One to two years of passenger transport / transit driving
experience. Knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances, rules,
defensive driving techniques and driving courtesies are
desirable.

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this class, employees
regularly are required to sit; talk or hear, in person and
by telephone; use hands to handle, feel or operate
equipment. Employees are required to walk, kneel, stoop,
twist, bull, push, kneel, lift, reach overhead, climb and
stand and occasionally exert up to 75 pounds of force and/or
negligible amount of force frequently to move occupied
mobility devices. Applicants will be required to undergo
drug testing prior to employment and will be subject to
further drug and alcohol testing throughout their period of
employment in accordance with the City of Peoria Substance
Abuse policy.
Mental Demands
While performing the duties of this class, employees are
regularly required to use oral and written communication
skills; read and interpret data, information and documents;
analyze and solve problems; interact with the general
public, public agencies, employees, and others who may be
encountered during the course of work.
