Senior Traffic Maintenance Technician
GENERAL PURPOSE
Incumbents provides advanced technical and paraprofessional
Public Works-related office and field support to the Streets
Division project managers in the planning, design
construction and construction management of Public Works
projects. Coordinate sign shop operations, installations
and maintenance, sign inventory, and record management.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the advanced journey-level class in the Public Works
Technician series, a series of Public Works support classes.
Assignments require the application of knowledge, experience
and independent judgment. Completed work is reviewed in
terms of compatibility with requirements, effectiveness and
expected results. Senior Traffic Maintenance Technician is
distinguished from Traffic Maintenance Technician in that
incumbents in the former class provide lead supervision to
other Public Works support staff and perform the more
difficult and responsible work.
SUPERVISION
RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives supervision from the Street
Supervisor or other management staff.
Incumbents
lead and participate in the work of lower-level technical
personnel and perform the more difficult analysis, drafting,
plan checking and related technical duties in the assigned
unit.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations

Provides day-to-day
leadership and works with assigned staff to ensure a
high-performance, customer service-oriented work
environment that supports achieving the department’s and
the City’s mission, strategic plan, objectives and values

Leads a team of employees
in tasks associated with all forms of traffic sign
management
-
Coordinates work
activities; evaluates work site to determine extent of
work, provides all necessary training, both safety and job
related; plans, schedules, oversees and reviews the work
of assigned staff

Assists Senior Pavement
Maintenance Technician with construction projects as
required
-
Confers with
representatives from engineering firms, developers,
property owners, utilities, other governmental agencies,
and contractors on technical matters to verify data,
coordinate various stages of work and/or explain the
City’s procedures and standards
-
Computes fees and cost
estimates
-
Inks, traces and letters
charts, graphs, maps, plans and other drawings; designs
and prepares plans utilizing computer-aided drafting;
prepares miscellaneous illustrative materials

Reviews and evaluates
studies, designs, reports and records generated by other
departments and outside entities
-
Conducts field surveys;
prepares sketch drawings to depict potential signing and
striping needs

Uses a computer to
generate a variety of special and recurring reports and to
update and maintain a variety of system records with a
strong emphasis on Hansen’s Street asset module

Utilizes survey grade GPS
unit to gather all attributes related to street assets and
apply to appropriate software

Writes or modifies bid
proposals for projects and administrator contracts that
have been awarded by the Division

Reviews and approves
invoices for management signature
-
Reviews specifications
and/or drawings prior to the start of construction and
makes recommendations for change or approval; confers with
supervisors, engineers, consultants and contractors
regarding interpretation of documents

Prepares a variety of
technical reports, specifications, graphs, charts and
correspondence; designs, prepares and updates a variety of
forms and charts throughout the department; writes
periodic progress reports on construction and expansion
projects

Provides field
supervision over assigned staff

Oversees sign
installation, fabrications, inventory, asset management,
and work order opening and closing

Assists with employee
performance appraisals
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
High School Diploma or GED, supplemented by college level
course work in civil engineering, traffic engineering, or
related and four years of increasingly responsible traffic
maintenance experience, two of which included experience in
traffic maintenance condition surveying. An Associates
degree in civil engineering, traffic engineering,
construction technology, or related may substitute for up to
two years of the required experience on a year for year
basis. A valid Arizona driver’s license, IMSA Certification
II for Signs and Striping, Barricade and Flagging
Certification, ATSSA’s Pavement Marking Technician
Certification.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Technical procedures and standards involved in design and
construction engineering and specification development.
City operating policies and procedures applicable to plan
check sign and striping plan approvals; drafting techniques,
terminology and equipment, including computer-aided
drafting; nomenclature, symbols and techniques of mapping
(GIS) and surveying (GPS); engineering mathematics,
including trigonometry; applicable ordinances and laws; lay
out, review and supervising the work of others. The latest
edition of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices,
Standard Highway Signs Manual, American Association of State
and Highway Transportation Officials, and Institute of
Transportation Engineers.

to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this class, employees are

concurrent tasks; work with constant interruptions; and
interact with officials and the public.
WORK ENVIRONMENT

The employee usually works under typical office conditions
where the noise level is quiet. Employees may occasionally
be required to work in outside conditions, exposed to hot or
