 Senior Instrumentation Technician

 

GENERAL PURPOSE

Under general supervision, performs technical and lead supervisory duties in the design, construction, installation, modification, maintenance and repair of electrical and electronic components.  The primary functions of this highly proficient technical classification are to plan and schedule the daily work for the Instrumentation Technicians, to perform analyses on the highly difficult technical problems and projects, and to insure that the instrumentation and electrical equipment is available for operation. 

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This person is highly proficient in the processes, equipment, computers, and electronics that are used in the City’s treatment plants and utility systems. An employee in this position must be technically proficient with the maintenance of various process control equipment, including telemetry and computerized monitoring systems, and with reviewing construction documents, equipment specifications, and programming and control logic for facilities. The employee in this class exercises team leader work duties over other employees and provides the supervisor documentation for performance reviews.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

The Senior Instrumentation Technician reports to the Senior Applications Development Analyst and provides lead-type direction to assigned Instrumentation Technicians and other assigned employees.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to this class.

§         Performs daily lead direction for the operation of the instrumentation technician team; documents the performance of subordinate employees; makes disciplinary and assignment recommendations to supervisor with supporting written documentation; monitors the work performed by others.

§         Plans and schedules preventative and corrective maintenance repairs; provides lead supervision in complex installation and repair work, such as overhauling an instrumentation or electrical process.

§         Provides training to assigned personnel in a variety of industrial electrical and electronic systems, components and devices, such as programmable logic controllers, motors, generators, power transfer switches, cameras, security systems, radio systems, meters, instruments, and computer systems.

§         Designs, installs, tests, calibrates, maintains and repairs electrical and electronic equipment and devices common to large water and wastewater systems and treatment plants.

§         Tests, diagnoses, programs, calibrates, and repairs a wide variety of electrical and electronic instrumentation devices, motors, machinery and equipment.

§         Uses modern state-of-the art precision and diagnostic instruments to test, calibrate and repair complex electrical and electronic devices and equipment.

§         Identifies and implements effective courses of action to complete assigned work for self and others.

§         Reads and interprets plans, specifications and manuals.

§         Maintains process control computers and telemetry equipment, including microprocessors, modems, and associated wiring at various facilities.

§         Documents safe work practices of employees and implements safety changes and modifications; participates in updating safety programs, and the scheduling and tracking of safety training.

§         Participates in developing, implementing, and evaluating construction plans, work processes, systems, and procedures to achieve annual goals, objectives, and work standards.

§         Operates and maintains ultraviolet, chlorine, and ozone disinfection systems, scrubbers, lead detector equipment.

§         Operates and maintains radio-based and fiber-optic telemetry and associated hardware and software equipment.

§         Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with those encountered in the course of the work and coordinates work assignments with other sections.

§         Provides back-up support duties to Senior Applications Development Analyst

§         Performs other duties as assigned.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Respond to emergency callouts/situations as necessary. Standby, weekend and holiday work may be requiredTwo Grade one ADEQ certifications within one year of hire.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

High school diploma or GED equivalency and two years of specialized vocational training or college course work in electronics or related field.  Five years of experience in testing and calibrating electronic equipment preferably related to industrial process control.  Must possess a valid Arizona driver’s license.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this class, employees are regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to stand and talk or hear; walk or sit; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.

The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Mental Demands

While performing the duties of this class, employees are regularly required to use written and oral communication skills; read and interpret data, information and documents; analyze and solve problems; use shop mathematics; observe and interpret situations; deal with changing, intensive deadlines; and interact with officials and the public.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, biological hazards, and risk of electrical shock. The employee occasionally works in extreme outside weather conditions, near moving mechanical parts, and on slippery and uneven surfaces. The noise level in the work environment is frequently loud.
