Senior Equipment Operator

JOB OBJECTIVES

To lead and participate in the work of a maintenance or construction crew; and to operate the most difficult and complex heavy equipment in a variety of maintenance and construction activities including excavating, grading, trenching, paving, rolling, refuse collection, sewer cleaning and maintenance, loading and related operations according to required standards.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receive general supervision from higher level supervisory or management staff. Exercise functional and technical supervision over lower level maintenance staff.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to this class.


• Lead a field crew in street maintenance, concrete maintenance, storm drain maintenance and construction.
• Operate heavy construction equipment such as large dump trucks, loaders, cranes, graders, bulldozers, rollers, pavers and other equipment.
• Monitor the condition of, and perform minor repairs on equipment, reporting the need for major repairs; check and adjust fluid level; grease and lubricate moving parts, as required.
• Operate sewer vactor and hydraulic cleaners and rodders in cleaning and maintaining sewer lines and storm water mainlines, inlets, basins and drywells, apply caustic soda to prevent odor in large sewer mains.
• Maintain records related to particular assignment; may input and recall information in a computer terminal or laptop. Open, create and close work orders and look up, verify, modify and maintain asset information electronically.
• Identify asphalt in need of repair; dig out potholes; spread asphalt in patching and repairing streets. Grade and crown City streets, roads and alley using a motor grader; roll asphalt.
• Operate heavy power-driven rollers in patching and ironing asphalt street surfaces and other heavy road repair equipment in the maintenance and repair of City streets.
• Install street barricades and cones prior to the performance of construction and repair activities; direct and control traffic around work sites.
• Maintain and repair commercial refuse containers, clean containers and patch holes or tears; determine the need for container repair or disposal.
• Serve as relief driver on all routes; operate sanitation equipment and perform refuse collection activities
• Read maps for the location and verification of work assignment and hazards such as manholes and sewer, gas, electrical, and water lines.
• Respond to requests and inquiries from customers and the general public regarding sidewalks, storm water systems and assets, streets, alleys, and City debris.
• Train new personnel on equipment operations and safety and Division procedures; monitor routes of personnel.
• Identify equipment needs for each assigned project; inform supervisor of equipment conditions and repairs needed.
• Maintain records and reports. Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
• Interpret and work from sketches and blueprints and prepare plans for minor projects.


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

High School Diploma or GED Equivalent supplemented by applicable training in equipment operation and maintenance. Three years of increasingly responsible experience involving refuse collection and/or the operation of heavy construction and automotive equipment. Extensive knowledge of materials, methods, practices and equipment used in municipal street paving, street cleaning operations, construction, maintenance and repair programs; types and level of maintenance and repair activities generally performed in construction, maintenance and repair programs, and street cleaning operations; elements of construction technology as they relate to the assigned construction maintenance and repair activities; general principles of personnel supervision and training; and occupational hazards and safety procedures. The possession of or the ability to obtain a Class B Arizona Commercial Drivers License is required at time of hire.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Work experience acting in a lead capacity; drainage/Sewer systems experience; traffic control experience and

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of, or ability to obtain, an Arizona forklift certificate is required for specific. License and certification is required and must be maintained during tenure as a Senior Equipment Operator.

Physical Demands
Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Position is subject to regular bending, twisting, kneeling, stooping, walking, climbing, and standing.




Mental Demands
While performing the duties of this class, employees are regularly required to use oral communication skills; analyze and solve problems; interact with the general public, vendors, public agencies, employees and others who may be encountered in the course of work.

Position may be subject to confined space entry and may operate under adverse conditions, working around electrical lines, natural gas lines, and water lines. Position is subject to noise and/or vibrations.
