Sanitation Worker


 

GENERAL PURPOSE
Under general supervision performs a variety of semi skilled work in the routine preventative maintenance of division vehicle fleet. Performs a variety of work including installation, assembly, delivery, repair and maintenance of small and large steel and plastic refuse and recycle barrels. May require evening and weekend work.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receive general supervision from the Sanitation Supervisor. Receive technical supervision from higher level field maintenance staff. Exercise no supervision.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to this class.

• Perform routine preventative maintenance on equipment as assigned; fuel and lube vehicle fleet for the division; repair or replace parts such as lights and bulbs, etc.
• Write up vehicles for repairs and communicate unsafe conditions, accidents or damage to vehicles, to supervisor
• Assemble and repair lids, hinges, and wheels on plastic and metal refuse containers in the field or in the shop, welds, cuts and fabricates with the use of various power and hand tools
• Clean and remove refuse from steel refuse containers; paint containers as required
• Deliver, set up and remove refuse and recycle containers from field locations
• Maintain routine reports of work performed; maintain records of containers delivered and exchanged
• Operate and maintain trucks and equipment common to refuse and recycle container repair/delivery
• Transport refuse and recycle material to and from the landfill, transfer station or the material recovery facility.
• Perform related duties, as assigned
• Work independently in the absence of supervision
• Operate light to heavy equipment and a variety of hand and power tools in a safe and efficient manner

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
High School Diploma or a GED and one year experience performing construction, and /or maintenance and repair work, and in the operation of light, medium, and heavy equipment. A valid Arizona Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is required.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Extensive knowledge of techniques and procedures related to refuse and recycling containers repair/delivery; occupational hazards and safety procedures related to assigned duties. Knowledge of welding techniques. Basic computer and report writing skills.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this class, employees are required to lift up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.



Mental Demands
While performing the duties of this class, employees are regularly required to use written and oral communication skills; read and interpret data; analyze and solve problems; interact with employees, public agencies and others who may be encountered during the course of work.
