Recreation Programmer
GENERAL PURPOSE
Performs moderately difficult work assisting in the
planning, implementation and coordination of a wide variety
of recreation activities, programs and special events at
recreation centers, parks, schools or other locations.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the paraprofessional class in the recreation series.
The Recreation Programmer is distinguished from the
Recreation Coordinator classification, in that the
Recreation Programmer assists the Recreation Coordinator,
who is typically responsible for a specific program.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receive supervision from a Recreation Coordinator or other
supervisory/management staff. Exercise direct supervision
over part time and volunteer personnel.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations
of the various types of work that may be performed. The
omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude
them from the position if the work is similar, related or a
logical assignment to this class.
• Assists in the coordination, promotion, and implementation
of recreational activities in a specialty program area such
as special events, senior citizens services, instructional
classes, professional sports activities, special needs
programs, adult or youth sports, aquatic programs, preschool
and youth and teen programs, and cultural programs
• Supervises the distribution, care, use and maintenance of
supplies and equipment for assigned programs
• Assists with purchasing necessary equipment and supplies.
• Participates in the selection, training, motivation,
supervision, and evaluation of part-time staff and
volunteers
• Maintains awareness of new developments in the recreation
field and offer suggestions to the Recreation Coordinator
• Assists with records and the development of reports
pertaining to program effectiveness. Maintains records of
registrations and fees collected; assist with the
maintenance and filing of accident and statistical reports,
as required
• Assists in the preparation of manuals, announcements,
bulletins and promotional materials including news releases,
flyers, pamphlets and brochures
• Performs on-site program inspections and evaluations to
ensure compliance with program and safety policies and
procedures
• Plans, coordinates, implements and evaluate sa variety of
recreation activities and specialized events. Attends
meetings as assigned
• Monitors program compliance and related laws, policies and
regulations
• Interacts with the public in a highly positive and
informative manner
• Presents ideas and recommendations clearly and concisely
both orally and in writing
• Maintains effective relationships with associates,
participants, community groups, administration and the
general public
• Assists with other recreation programs as requested.
Performs related duties, as assigned. Some positions will
require the performance of additional position
accountabilities.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
General Assignments
High School Diploma or GED supplemented by 15 hours of
college level course work in recreation, recreation
administration, leisure studies or a related field and one
year of experience in the implementation or supervision of
recreation programs or activities or an equivalent
combination of education and experience. Possession of or
ability to obtain Arizona Drivers License. Some positions
may require possession of, or ability to obtain,
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid
Certification.
AM/PM Assignments
Must be 21 years of age or older. High School Diploma or
equivalent and at least one of the following:
• Three or more hours in early childhood development or a
closely related field from an accredited college or 60
actual hours of instruction, provided in conferences,
seminars, lectures or workshops in a related area of
childcare;
• N.A.C., C.D.A., C.C.P. or C.P.C. credential and at least
18 months of child care experience;
• A minimum of 24 credit hours from an accredited college or
university, including at least six hours of course work in
the areas of early childhood, child development, or closely
related field, and 18 months of child care experience;
• Associate degree from an accredited college or university
in the areas of early childhood, child development, or
closely related field, and six months of child care
experience;
• Bachelor degree from an accredited college or university
in the areas of early childhood development, or closely
related field, and three months of child care experience.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
General Assignments
Two years municipal recreation experience in the area of
assignment is preferred. A Bachelors degree is highly
desirable. Knowledge of maintenance and operations methods
used in recreation facilities. A variety of active and
passive games and activities suitable for children,
adolescents, adults, senior citizens and/or special
populations. The tools and techniques of teaching music,
drama, crafts, sports or other recreational/leisure time
activities. The rules and regulations governing various
competitive athletic games such as softball, basketball, and
table games.
AM/PM Assignments
Two years or more of childcare experience. Municipal
recreation experience is preferred. A Bachelors degree is
highly desirable. Knowledge of maintenance and operations
methods used in recreation facilities. A variety of active
and passive games and activities suitable for children,
adolescents, adults, senior citizens and/or special
populations. The tools and techniques of teaching music,
drama, crafts, sports or other recreational/leisure time
activities. The rules and regulations governing various
competitive athletic games such as softball, basketball, and
table games.

Physical Requirements:
While performing the duties of this class, employees are
regularly required to sit; talk or hear, in persona and by
telephone; use hands repetitively to finger, handle, fell or
operate computers and other standard office equipment; and
to reach with hands and arms. Employees are required to
walk, kneel, stoop, climb and stand and to occasionally
exert up to 50 pounds of force and/or up to 20 pounds of
force frequently and the use of arm and/or leg controls
require exertion of forces greater than for sedentary work.
Mental Demands
While performing the duties of this class, employees
regularly are required to use oral and written communication
skills; read and interpret data, information and documents;
analyze and solve problems; interact with the general
public, contractors, engineers, vendors, public agencies,
employees and others who may be encountered during the
course of work.
Work Environment:
Position is typically office or administrative work and is
not substantially exposed to adverse environmental
conditions. Occasionally, position is subject to outside
environmental conditions: No effective protection from
weather. Position may be subject to extreme heat or cold for
periods of more than one hour.
