Planning Technician
GENERAL PURPOSE
Performs technical planning work in the support of the
Planning Division; and, provides administrative support
to professional planning staff related to planning
analyses and report preparation.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives general supervision from the Planning Manager.
Exercises no supervision.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The duties listed below are intended only as

Provides information to the public regarding zoning
requirements involving building setbacks, home
additions, fences, pools and accessory buildings
Confers with and advises architects, builders,
attorneys, contractors, engineers, and the general
public regarding City development requirements, codes,
fees, and standards; reviews and logs-in applications
Reviews plans for general conformance with subdivision
and zoning codes; maintains records of approved plans;
prepares correspondence related to plan approval
Researches, analyzes, and interprets social, economic,
population, and land use data and trends; prepares
written reports on various planning matters
Assists in preparing agendas and exhibits for City
Council meetings, Planning and Zoning Commission,
various committees, and advisory boards as directed
Attends and participates in professional groups and
conferences as necessary
Researches and drafts ordinances for review\
Interprets and applies applicable laws, ordinances,
and policies
Communicates clearly and concisely, both orally and in
writing
Establishes and maintains effective working
relationships with those contacted in the course of work
Analyzes and compiles technical information and
reports
Performs related duties as assigned
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
High school diploma/G.E.D. and two years of college
coursework in urban planning or a closely related field
and one year experience in a position performing entry
level planning work or an equivalent combination of
training and experience. Extensive knowledge of modern
principles and practices of urban planning; master plan
and zoning administration; current literature,
information sources, and research techniques in the
field of urban planning; laws, ordinances, policies, and
regulations governing planning and land use.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelors degree in urban planning or a closely related
field.
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this class, employees are
regularly required to walk, stand and sit; talk and
hear, both in person and by telephone; use hands to
finger, handle, feel or operate standard office
equipment; and reach with hands and arms and exert up to
10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount
of force frequently to move objects; involves sitting
most of the time. Specific vision abilities required by
this job include close vision, color vision and the
ability to adjust focus.
Mental Demands
While performing the duties of this class, employees are
regularly required to use written and oral communication
skills; read and interpret information and documents;
analyze and solve problems; observe and interpret
situations; perform highly detailed work on multiple,
concurrent tasks; work with constant interruptions; and
interact with officials and the public.
Work Environment
Position is typically office or administrative work and
is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental
conditions.
