Parks and Landscape Worker
GENERAL PURPOSE
Respond to questions,
provide direction and assistance to park visitors as
necessary. Perform a variety of semi‑skilled and skilled
tasks in the construction, maintenance, and repair of City
parks, right of ways, retention basins, athletic fields, and
landscaped areas; perform unskilled paint work in the
removal of graffiti.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the journey level
class in the Maintenance Worker class services. Incumbents
assigned to this class initially perform routine and
closely-related duties under close supervision. However, as
experience is acquired, they are expected to work
independently exercising judgment and initiative. Positions
in this class are distinguished from those in the Senior
Maintenance Worker class in that the Maintenance Worker does
not frequently perform the most complex and difficult field
maintenance duties or provide lead supervision to other
field maintenance personnel.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receive general supervision
from Department supervisory and management personnel.
Receive technical or functional supervision from higher
level field maintenance staff. May provide direction and
guidance to grounds maintenance personnel.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The duties listed below are intended only as
illustrations of the various types of work that may be

position will require the performance of all “General”
responsibilities along with special assignment
responsibilities.
GENERAL
·
Effectively responds to
requests for information and provides assistance to the
general public when appropriate
·
Retains site specific field
information and continuously updates appropriate databases
·
Performs semi‑skilled tasks
in a variety of construction, maintenance and field
renovation activities
·
Operates a variety of
vehicles and equipment in a safe and effective manner
·
Uses and operates hand
tools, mechanical equipment, power tools, and equipment
required for the work in a safe and efficient manner
·
May operate more complex
equipment such as sweepers, aerators, spreaders, backhoe,
skid loaders, sod cutters; knowledge and ability to
calibrate fertilizer equipment.
·
Works safely and adheres to
principles of safety when working near traffic or in other
environments
·
Properly records equipment
usage and work order forms to document actions taken and
maintain daily activity logs
·
Performs preventative
maintenance on equipment and vehicles
·
Keeps and maintains accurate
records regarding the time required to complete assigned
duties
·
Establishes and maintains
open communication, promoting effective working
relationships with those contacted in the course of work
·
Attendance and punctuality
are essential functions to this position.
PARKS STAFF General
·
Inspects park facilities
routinely and reports unsafe conditions to management
·
Opens, closes and secures
facilities as instructed; reports unlawful acts or dangerous
activities to the Police Department immediately
·
Operates mowers, tractors,
trenchers, vehicles, and equipment safely; utilizes a
variety of hand and power tools in park landscape
maintenance work
·
Climbs and trims trees;
operates a tractor, weed eater, mower, and loader
·
Performs a variety of duties
in the maintenance and repair of the City’s irrigation
systems
·
Cleans restrooms and picks
up litter around parks
·
Waters, mows, weeds, trims,
renovates, and fertilizes lawns; prunes trees and shrubs;
plants trees, flowers, and shrubs
·
Rakes leaves and cleans
walks, fields, courts, and other facilities
·
Applies herbicides,
fungicides, and pesticides safely; maintains records of
fertilizers and chemicals used
·
Performs difficult manual
labor, including lifting heavy weights, stooping, bending,
twisting, digging and kneeling
·
Assists in the requisition
and purchase of materials and supplies
·
Performs related duties, as
assigned
PARKS
STAFF Graffiti Removal Assignment
·
Conducts graffiti abatement
on a complaint and proactive basis within 24 hours of a
reported graffiti violation.
·
Operates gas and electric
paint sprayers, gas powered water cannon, and soda blaster
-
Operation of a spectrophotometer and complex paint
matching equipment
·
Responsible for the care and
maintenance of all graffiti equipment including vehicle and
inventory control of paint and assorted paint materials.
Maintains Storage area.
·
Prepares surface for
painting and mixes various paints
·
Paints fences, buildings,
walls, sidewalks, and signs for the removal of graffiti
·
Maintains accurate records
regarding paint used and areas covered

Operation of a personal computer

Prepare reports and document information by using MS Word
and Excel programs

Customer service skills with contacts & citizens including
appropriate follow up
SPORTS
COMPLEX (ATHLETIC FIELDS) STAFF
·
Operates mowers, tractors,

field maintenance

REQUIRED
QUALIFICATIONS
High School Diploma or GED. 2 years
experience performing general landscape work. Valid
Arizona
driver’s license. Valid Arizona Structural Pest Certificate
within 12 months from date of hire. Some positions require
the ability to work a varied schedule.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
PARKS:
Additional experience performing general
landscape work.
PARKS STAFF Graffiti
Removal Assignment:
Previous experience performing painting work.
SPORTS COMPLEX (ATHLETIC FIELDS):
Two years
experience with the maintenance of athletic fields,
preferably baseball field maintenance to include experience
with irrigation systems.

performing the duties of this class, employees are required
to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up
