Mechanic
GENERAL PURPOSE
Makes routine mechanical repairs to automotive and other
power-driven equipment; and, maintains and services a
variety of vehicle and equipment.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the entry/journey level in the Mechanic series.
Incumbents of this class enter performing the more
routine Mechanic duties under close supervision.
However, as experience is gained, incumbents are
expected to perform with increasing independence. This
class is distinguished from the Senior Mechanic in that
positions assigned to the Senior Mechanic class perform
the most difficult mechanical duties. This position
works in a team environment.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives general supervision from the Senior Mechanic
Technician and/or Equipment Maintenance Supervisor.
Receive technical and functional supervision from the
Senior Mechanic. Exercise no supervision.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The duties listed below are intended only as
illustrations of the various types of work that may be
performed. The omission of specific statements of duties
does not exclude them from the position if the work is
similar, related or a logical assignment to this class.
• Inspects and diagnoses mechanical difficulties in City
automobiles, trucks, and a variety of maintenance and
construction equipment
• Repairs, and diagnoses engines, transmissions,
differentials, and clutches
• Replaces or repairs faulty parts, including wheel
bearings, clutches, oil seals, shock absorbers, exhaust
systems, steering mechanisms, and related parts and
equipment
• Repairs and replaces such components as generators,
distributors, relays, lights, and switches
• Performs major preventative maintenance tasks
• Maintains work, time, and material records
• Tunes up engines, replaces ignition parts, repairs
fuel system components and cleans and adjusts
carburetors
• Some positions may be required to perform tune-up and
emission testing
• Maintains shop cleanliness; repairs shop equipment as
necessary
• Cleans vehicles and equipment
• Performs related duties, as assigned
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
High School Diploma or GED equivalent and two years of
experience performing journey level mechanic work in the
servicing and repair of vehicles, trucks or equipment.
Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate,
valid Arizona commercial driver's license (Class A or B)
within six months of hire. Four (4) A.S.E. certificates
at the time or hire or ability to obtain within twelve
months of hire date. Possession of, or ability to
obtain, an appropriate, valid air-conditioning license
for automotive air-conditioning work/repair.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Additional specialized training and experience in
vehicle/equipment maintenance and repair; knowledge of
the tools, equipment, and procedures used in the
overhaul, repair, and adjustments of diesel and
gas-powered equipment; Operation and care of electrical
systems; Hydraulic and electrical systems; Safe work
practices. Completion of a recognized mechanical trade
school.

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this class, employees
will exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or
in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in
excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
