OBJECTIVES
Incumbents in this position will perform a variety of
clerical library work in support of activities such as
circulation, and public assistance.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the entry/journey level position. Incumbents
initially perform the more routine duties assigned to
positions in this series and work under close supervision.
However, as experience is gained, incumbents are expected to
perform the full range of duties as assigned with increasing
independence.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Incumbents in this position will receive general supervision
from higher level library staff or from other supervisory or
management staff. No supervision is exercised.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations
of the various types of work that may be performed. The
omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude
them from the position if the work is similar, related or a
logical assignment to this class.
• Receives and verifies cash payments from the public,
verifies negotiability of checks; utilizes cash register and
processes credit card transactions
• Checks out books and other library materials; receive,
processes and shelves returned materials; alphabetizes and
sorts circulation carts.
• Determines eligibility and verifies patron information for
library cards; enters information into a database; issues
library cards
• Evaluates and maintains orderliness of shelved materials;
pulls and routes materials in need of mending, binding,
repairing or discarding as required.
• Performs general clerical work such as typing, entering
information into a computer, maintain files and records
• Retrieves items on hold or requests from branch library
and performs system transit
• Demonstrates the use of the on-line catalog and website
including hold placement, account information and catalog
resources
• Collects data and report statistics to Library Services
Coordinator
• Assists the public, in person, via the telephone or e-mail
with availability status of library materials
• Attends and actively participate in circulation meetings,
workshops and in-house training.
• Provides general assistance to the public and deals
tactfully and courteously with library customers in
answering questions, and resolving simple issues and
maintains patron confidentiality.
• Learns standard library practices and procedures
• Follows oral and written instructions
• Performs clerical library work with speed and accuracy
• Accurately counts, records and balance assigned
transactions
• Accurately and rapidly performs mathematical calculations
• Operates a calculator, personal computer and other office
equipment
• Keyboarding at a speed necessary for successful job
performance
• Communicates clearly and concisely, both orally and in
writing
• Establishes and maintains cooperative working
relationships with those contacted in the course of work,
supports the goals of the organization.
• Demonstrates the use of self service and other
technology(s) to library patrons
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
High School diploma or GED equivalent is required. Knowledge
of basic library practices and procedures is required.
English usage to include, spelling, grammar and punctuation
are required. Knowledge of basic mathematics principles is
required. Knowledge of modern office procedures, methods and
computer equipment is required as well as a valid Arizona
drivers license.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
One year of experience as a library page is desired.

Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this class, an employee is
frequently required to sit, walk and stand; talk or hear, in
person and by telephone; use hands to finger, handle, feel
or operate standard office equipment; engage in repetitive
movement with hands and wrists; reach with hands and arms
and lift up to 25 pounds. Employees regularly may stoop,
kneel, bend or crouch and lift up to 50 pounds. Employees
may lift or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities
required by this job include close vision, distance vision,
the use of both eyes and the ability to adjust focus.
Mental Demands
While performing the duties of this job, employees are
regularly required to use written and oral communication
skills; read and interpret data, information and documents;
analyze and solve non-routine and complex office
administrative problems; use math and mathematical
reasoning; observe and interpret situations; learn and apply
new information or skills; perform highly detailed work on
multiple, concurrent tasks; work under intensive deadlines
with frequent interruptions; and interact with City
managers, staff, customers, the public and others
encountered in the course of work, some of whom may be
dissatisfied or abusive individuals.
Work Environment:
Position is typically office or administrative work and is
not substantially exposed to adverse environmental
conditions.
