Support Services Technician
GENERAL PURPOSE
Perform maintenance and testing of self-contained breathing
apparatus (SCBA), associated breathing air compressor
systems, and storage cylinders; maintain required inventory
and maintenance records.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receive general direction from the Fire Department
Maintenance Officer. May exercise technical and functional
supervision over assigned personnel.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations
of the various types of work that may be performed. The
omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude
them from the position if the work is similar, related or a
logical assignment to this class.
• Conduct factory-certified repairs, and inventory control
of self-contained breathing apparatus.
• Perform factory-mandated modifications to self-contained
breathing apparatus.
• Order and maintain parts and equipment inventory for SCBA.
• Conduct periodic maintenance of breathing apparatus air
compressor; maintain detailed maintenance records.
• Assist with the development of the annual budget for the
respiratory protection program.
• Maintain certification documents and records for all
self-contained breathing apparatus in accordance with OSHA
and NFPA requirements and recommendations.
• Review and maintain the department’s Respiratory
Protection Program.
• Conduct fit testing for all departmental personnel.
• Conduct training on use, care, and donning of
self-contained breathing apparatus.
• Maintain equipment unique to fire services; i.e., nozzles,
saws, extrication equipment.
• Deliver or arrange for the delivery of equipment for
repair and maintenance; coordinate annual pump test.
• Establish and maintain inventory records on all Fire
Department equipment and supplies.
• Perform minor apparatus electrical as necessary.
• Assist with special projects and perform related duties as
assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade;
manufacturer authorized and conducted training in the use,
care, maintenance, and testing of self-contained breathing
apparatus. Two years maintenance experience involving the
use, care, maintenance, and testing of self-contained
breathing apparatus including the maintenance of pertinent
records, reports and logs.
REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS:
Possession of, or ability to obtain and maintain, an
appropriate, valid Arizona driver’s license. Possession of,
or ability to obtain prior to appointment, an appropriate
manufacturer authorized and conducted certification for
self-contained breathing apparatus.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Basic operation of fire fighting equipment and apparatus
(i.e., extrication equipment, and self-contained breathing
apparatus). Occupational hazards and standard safety
practices necessary in the performance of duties. IBM
compatible computers. Thorough operation of self-contained
breathing apparatus and test equipment. Basic inventory
control methods. NFPA 1404 Fire Department self-contained
breathing apparatus program. NFPA 1981 Open-Circuit
self-contained breathing apparatus for the Fire Service.
OSHA Rules and Regulations pertaining to Respiratory
Protection. Use an IBM compatible computer. Troubleshoot and
accurately determine repair and maintenance needs for
self-contained breathing apparatus. Maintain accurate logs,
records and reports. Maintain, repair, and test
self-contained breathing apparatus and related equipment.
Obtain and/or maintain a level 3 MSA technician
certification or other similar type certification based on
current SCBA equipment.
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS
Physical Requirements:
Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to
50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of
force constantly to move objects.
Work Environment:
Position is subject to noise and vibration. Position is
subject to hazards: Proximity to moving mechanical parts,
electrical current, and exposure to chemicals, etc. Position
is subject to atmospheric conditions: Fumes, odors, dusts,
mists, gases, or poor ventilation.
