Fire Prevention Inspector
GENERAL PURPOSE
Perform work involving the enforcement of fire codes by
investigating new or existing structures for
conformance; investigate and follow through on citizen
complaints.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receive general direction from the Fire Marshall.
Exercise no supervision.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The duties listed below are intended only as
illustrations of the various types of work that may be
performed. The omission of specific statements of duties
does not exclude them from the position if the work is
similar, related or a logical assignment to this class.
Conducts fire safety inspections of existing
facilities and buildings for conformance with existing
codes.
Conducts acceptance test of alarms, sprinklers,
extinguishers, and other fire protection systems and
equipment
Prepares inspection reports and enter information into
a computerized data base
Researches code violations and provide direction
and/or technical assistance for correction of identified
violations
Investigates citizen complaints involving fire safety
or hazardous conditions
Assists in the preparation and presentation of public
safety and fire prevention programs to civic, school,
and community groups
Maintains educational materials, designs and develops
or orders new materials as the need arises
Reviews plans for fire/safety construction and fire
suppression systems for compliance with applicable codes
and standards
Reviews and issues fire prevention permit applications
in accordance with standards
Investigates fire cause and origin, which includes
evidence collection and preservation, detailed report
writing, and possible court testimony
Writes detailed reports and operates various
audio-visual equipment; such as, different types of
projectors, tape recorders, and VCRs
Establishes, researches, and maintains appropriate
files
Performs related duties, as assigned
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
High School Diploma or equivalent, supplemented by
college level course work in fire science, education, or
a related field and two years in fire prevention, fire
fighting, or in work involving interpretation and
enforcement of various codes. Possession of, or ability
to obtain, an appropriate, valid Arizona drivers
license. Possession of, or ability to obtain, an ICBO
Fire Code Certification within one year from date of
employment. Possession of, or ability to obtain, Arizona
Arson Investigator Level one and two, or equivalent,
within one year of hire.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of the principles, methods, and practices of
modern fire prevention and inspection; fire safety codes
and their interpretation; fire cause, recognition and
arson investigation; fire detection and suppression
systems.

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this class, employees are
regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, feel
or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with
hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to
stand and talk or hear. The employee is frequently
required to walk; sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel,
crouch, or crawl. The employee must lift and/or move up
to 20 pounds occasionally to move objects. Specific
vision abilities required by this job include close
vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral
vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust
focus.
Mental Demands
While performing the duties of this class, employees are
regularly required to use written and oral communication
skills; read and interpret data, information and
documents; analyze and solve problems; use math and
mathematical reasoning; observe and interpret
situations; learn and apply new information or new
skills; work under deadlines with constant
interruptions; interact with City staff and other
organizations; and occasionally deal with dissatisfied
or quarrelsome individuals.
Work Environment:
Position is subject to atmospheric conditions: Fumes,
odors, dusts, mists, gases, or poor ventilation.
Position is subject to both environmental conditions:
activities occur both inside and outside.
