Specialist
JOB OBJECTIVES
Develops, coordinates and presents community service
activities and programs in the areas of fire prevention,
fire and life safety, and community relations.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives direction from Fire Department management.
Exercises technical and functional supervision over
volunteer personnel.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The duties listed below are intended only as
illustrations of the various types of work that may be

• Develops, prepares and conducts neighborhood/community
training on fire and life safety topics, evaluates
programs and make recommendations for improvement.
Research and develop new programs, prepare literature
and visual aids for presentations
• Compiles and analyzes statistical information relative
to potential fire and life safety problems within the
community; compiles data for and prepares monthly and
annual reports on fire safety activities and programs
• Organizes and coordinates Fire Department involvement
in Fire Department promotional events and City sponsored
activities. Coordinates the Juvenile Fire Setter
Prevention Program; develops, implements and evaluates
fire safety curriculums for the public school system for
all grade levels
• Responds to citizen requests for information or
programs; schedules station tours and special
departmental events
• Works closely with the Fire Operations Division in
teaching various educational programs for presentation
to students, the public, and City employees
• Maintains the Fire Prevention Library, and an
inventory of fire prevention handouts and information;
orders replacement materials on a timely basis to ensure
that required publications and materials are available
for distribution at scheduled educational programs
• Submits budget recommendations and justifications to
meet the Fire Prevention Division’s educational
requirements
• Writes public service announcements, media releases
for major incidents and seasonal public safety articles
to be submitted to the press for publication
• Communicates effectively, both orally and in writing
• Performs data entry using computer systems
• Establishes and maintains effective working
relationships with a wide range of community
organizations, media representatives and the public
• Assists in the preparation of the Fire Department
community relations budget
• Works a flexible schedule, which may include nights
and weekends to meet customer needs
• Performs other related duties, as assigned
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree with major course work
in communications, education, or a related field and two
years of experience in public contact work in the area
of Fire Public Safety Education or experience providing
formal education programs. Extensive knowledge of the
organization and function of municipal government; basic
research and survey techniques and report writing.
Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate,
valid, Arizona driver’s license.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Valid NFPA 1035, Level II teaching certification or
equivalent within three (3) years of hire. Thorough
knowledge of public education programs provided by the
Peoria Fire Department; knowledge of the English
language including punctuation, spelling and grammar;
knowledge of education principles, methods and
practices; thorough knowledge of fire causes and
preventative measures; basic methods, practices and
objectives of a municipal fire department; ability to
speak Spanish.

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this class, employees are
regularly required to sit, stand and walk; talk or hear,
both in person and by telephone; use hands to finger,
handle, feel or operate standard office equipment;
operate a vehicle; and reach with hands and arms. The
employee may occasionally be required to lift up to 50
pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of
force frequently. Specific vision abilities required by
this job include close vision, distance vision, depth
perception, color vision, and the ability to adjust
focus.
Mental Demands:
While performing the duties of this class, employees
regularly are required to use oral and written
communication skills; read and interpret data,
information and documents; analyze and solve problems;
interact with the general public, vendors, public
agencies, employees and others who may be encountered
during the course of work.
Work Environment:
Position is typically office, classroom and outdoor
settings. May require some lifting and transporting of
audiovisual equipment.
