Fire
Engineer
JOB
OBJECTIVES
Operate
and maintain a variety of fire apparatus and fire fighting
equipment; participate in fire fighting activities,
emergency medical services, fire prevention inspections, and
training; and, perform mechanical maintenance on vehicles,
equipment, and apparatus.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receive
general supervision from a Fire Captain. Exercise technical
supervision over other professional fire fighters with
respect to the operation and maintenance of vehicles,
equipment, and apparatus.
POSITION
ACCOUNTABILITIES
- May include, but are not limited to, the following:

Drive fire pumping apparatus to alarms and
operate pump at the fire scene
·
Regulate water pressure through hose lines.
·
Operate and oversee the use of numerous types
of vehicles, equipment, tools, and apparatus. Inspect
vehicles, equipment, and apparatus; perform maintenance and
minor repair work;
·
Identify the need for major repairs.
·
Respond to emergency calls to protect life
and property
·
Fight fires, provide medical assistance, and
perform rescue operations.
·
Maintain and update Department maps, run
reports, and equipment records.
·
Maintain awareness of City geography and the
water system.
·
May perform paramedic duties as required;
administer advanced life support procedures to persons
suffering medical emergencies
·
Check and maintain medical equipment and drug
supplies.
·
May assist with connecting and laying hose
lines; enter burning areas or buildings with hose lines;
assist in operating nozzles and directing a stream of water
on fires;
·
Carry and operate chemical fire
extinguishers;
·
Raise, lower, and climb ladders; make
forcible entry into building when necessary.
·
Assist with training personnel in the
operation and maintenance of vehicles, equipment, and
apparatus.
·
Assist paramedics at medical emergencies;
apply techniques for the control of bleeding; utilize
immobilization techniques to stabilize patient.
·
Participate in fire inspections and other
fire prevention activities.
·
Participate in drills and other training
activities. Participate in station maintenance and repair
work. Function in the position of "move-up" Fire Captain.
Perform related duties, as assigned.
CRITICAL
SKILLS/EXPERTISE - needed to complete position
accountabilities
Knowledge
of:
Principles, practices, and procedures of modern fire
fighting. Principles of mechanics, hydraulics, and
mathematics as related to Fire Engineer duties. Purposes and
uses of a variety of vehicles, equipment, tools, and
apparatus used in fire fighting, rescue, and medical
assistance operations. Advanced first aid, CPR, and other
medical assistance techniques. Modern office methods,
procedures, and computer equipment.
Ability
to:
Effectively and safely drive and operate the full range of
fire apparatus and equipment used by the Department. Perform
field calculations of hydraulics for the proper and
effective operations of equipment at emergency scenes. Think
and act quickly and effectively in emergencies.
Experience and Education:
Experience:
Three
years of full time municipal fire suppression and prevention
experience with the City of Peoria.
Education:
Must have
a Certificate of Completion in Fire Science. The Association
of Maricopa County Community Colleges dictates the
components of the certificate.
Additionally, successful candidates will be required to
attend a City of Peoria Aspiring Supervisor Academy and the
Captain’s Move-up Class within 12 months of appointment.
ADDITIONAL
REQUIREMENTS
Physical
Requirements:
Exerting
in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in
excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of
20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Work
Environment:
Position
is subject to outside environmental conditions: No effective
protection from weather. Position may be subject to extreme
heat or cold for periods of more than one hour. Position is
subject to hazards: Proximity to moving mechanical parts,
electrical current, exposure to chemicals, etc. Position is
subject to atmospheric conditions: Fumes, odors, dusts,
mists, gases, or poor ventilation. Position is required to
wear respirator to complete a portion of its position
accountabilities.
License
or Certificate:
Possession of an EMT Certificate. Possession of an
appropriate, valid Fire Fighter's Certificate. Possession
of, or ability to obtain, Arizona Hazardous Materials First
Responder (40 hour) certificate. Possession of a valid
Paramedic Certificate may be required by some positions.
Possession of an appropriate, valid Arizona's driver's
license.
