Fire
Captain
GENERAL PURPOSE
Supervise and oversee a fire company, including activities
involving fire suppression, emergency rescue, fire
inspection, fire investigation, and training; and, provide
staff assistance to the Battalion Chief.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receive direction from a Battalion Chief. Exercise direct,
technical, and functional supervision over fire fighting and
clerical staff.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations
of the various types of work that may be performed. The
omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude
them from the position if the work is similar, related or a
logical assignment to this class.
Recommend and assist in the implementation of goals and
objectives
Establish schedules and methods for assigned shift
Implement policies and procedures.
Plan and execute work assignments of fire personnel in an
assigned company.
Direct fire fighting and rescue operations until relieved
by a superior officer
Respond to fire alarms as an incident commander, assuming
responsibility for the supervision, performance and safety
of assigned fire fighting personnel on the scene of an
emergency incident. Supervise and assist in rendering first
aid at an emergency incident.
Obtain and otherwise preserve evidence at a fire scene.
Participate in the selection of staff; participate in
monitoring employee performance objectives; prepare employee
performance reviews; provide or coordinate staff training;
work with employees to correct deficiencies; implement
discipline procedures.
Supervise and participate in the inspection of buildings
and installations for fire hazards and fire safety systems
as required by State law and City ordinances.
Identify the fire training needs of company personnel,
including such areas as driving and operating equipment;
ensure that necessary training is provided.
Some positions may perform paramedic duties as required;
administer advanced life support procedures to persons
suffering medical emergencies;
Check and maintain medical equipment and drug supplies.
Participate in budget preparation and administration;
prepare cost estimates for budget recommendations; submit
justifications for needed equipment; monitor and control
expenditures.
Direct the cleaning of quarters, equipment, and apparatus
at a fire station.
Perform a wide variety of general staff work as assigned.
Assist in coordinating the maintenance and repair of fire
suppression equipment and facilities; such as, hydrants,
trucks, and support equipment.
Prepare reports, forms, recommendations, and other
required administrative procedures of the Company.
Assist other management staff in maintaining and improving
upon the operation of the Department.
Perform public speaking duties as part of the Department's
public education programs.
Perform related duties, as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates must have a minimum of seven years of full-time
service as a firefighter with the City of Peoria Fire
Department and an Associates Degree in Fire Science or
related field (as approved by the Fire Chief). Candidates
must be on the current Engineers list, or have completed the
Engineer Move-Up Program and 264 working out-of-class hours.
Any combination of experience and training that would likely
provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.
REQUIRED LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION
Possession of a valid EMT certificate. Possession of, or
ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid Fire Fighter's
certificate. Possession of a valid Paramedic certificate may
be required by some positions. Possession of a Hazardous
Material First Responder Certificate. Possession of, or
ability to obtain, a National Fire Protection Association,
Fire Service Instructor Level 1 Certificate. NFPA/State of
Arizona Incident Safety Officer (ISO) Certificate will be
required within one year of appointment. Possession of, or
ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid Arizona commercial
driver's license.
EDUCATION
Candidates are required to complete the following college
courses prior to testing for Captain:
1. Hydraulics
2. Apparatus
3. Fire Suppression
4. Hazardous Materials
5. Fire Fighter Safety and Building Construction
6. Tactics and Strategy
Upon promotion, candidates are further required to:
1. Successfully complete the City of Peorias
Captains Probationary Program within the first 12 months.
2. Successfully complete the Peoria Regional Battalion Chief
Academy or the City of Peorias Supervisory Academy- within
the first 12 months.
3. Have an Associates Degree in Fire Science or a related
field (as approved by the Fire Chief). The Association of
Maricopa County Community Colleges dictates the components
of this Degree.
4. Candidates not meeting all requirements will not be
eligible to participate in the promotional process unless
otherwise specified by the Fire Chief.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Principles, practices, and procedures of modern fire
fighting. Rules, regulations, and operational procedures of
the Fire Department in modern fire fighting activities.
Principles and practices of supervision and training. Local
geography, including the location of fire hydrants and the
major fire hazards of the City. Current uniform fire code
and modern investigation methods. Conduct preliminary fact
finding inspections and investigations, including evidence
gathering. Operate apparatus and equipment used in modern
fire fighting activities. Supervise, train, and evaluate
assigned staff. Instruct and lead fire training sessions and
courses.

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this class, employees
regularly are required to sit; talk or hear, in person and
by telephone, use hands repetitively to handle, feel or
operate equipment; and reach with hands and arms. Employees
are required to walk, stoop, climb, stand and exerting in
excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess
of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20
pounds of force constantly to move objects. Specific vision
abilities required by this job include close vision, use of
both eyes, ability to adjust focus and to distinguish basic
colors and/or shades.
Mental Demands
While performing the duties of the this class, employees
regularly are required to use oral communication skills;
read and interpret data, information and documents; analyze
and solve problems; interact with the general public,
contractors, engineers, public agencies, employees , and
others who may be encountered during the course of work.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work environment characteristics described here are
representative of those an employee encounters while
performing the essential functions of this class. Reasonable

The employee spends substantial time in the field and is
subject to outside environmental conditions: No effective
protection from weather. Position may be subject to extreme
heat or cold for periods of more than one hour. Position is
subject to hazards: Proximity to moving mechanical parts,
electrical current, exposure to chemicals, etc. Position is
subject to atmospheric conditions: Fumes, odors, dusts,
mists, gases, or poor ventilation. Position is required to
wear respirator to complete a portion of its position
accountabilities.
