Equipment Operator
GENERAL PURPOSE
Operate heavy construction and maintenance equipment in a
variety of maintenance activities including excavating,
grading, trenching, sanitation collection and street
cleaning, and related operations according to required
standards; and perform semi-skilled and skilled maintenance
tasks.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receive general supervision from higher level supervisory
and management staff. Exercise no supervision.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Operate a variety of complex heavy construction/power
driven equipment such as bulldozers, cranes, sewer roders,
vactors, large trucks, front-end loaders, self-contained
patch trucks, water truck, asphalt lay down machine,
concrete truck, oil distribution truck, milling machine for
a variety of construction and maintenance operations
involving streets, sidewalks, curbs, ditches, gutters,
alleys, storm drains and sanitation services
• Operate a small backhoe to dig ditches and gutters;
operate a street sweeper as required
• Operate long line paint striping truck, including a short
line striper, push behind and hot applied thermal plastics
applicator, truck mounted
• Break out and load asphalt and concrete onto large dump
trucks
• Operate a packer truck and load refuse and brush; dispose
refuse at local landfill; perform street cleaning duties as
required
• Load water at fire hydrants; operate a variety of power
tools including concrete saws, chain saws and jack hammers
• Identify equipment needs for each assigned project
• Perform a variety of additional semi-skilled and skilled
construction and maintenance tasks such as concrete work,
truck driving, asphalt spreading and patching, jack
hammering and a variety of repair activities when equipment
is not in use
• Install traffic cones and barricades; route and control
traffic around work site
• Perform related duties as assigned
• Perform maintenance on assigned equipment in an efficient,
safe manner
• Understand and follow oral and written instructions; work
independently or in a crew situation, as assigned; establish
and maintain cooperative-working relationships with those
contacted in the course of work
FOR SOLID WASTE DIVISION:
A Solid Waste Equipment Operator is responsible for the
safe, economical, and efficient operation of designated
heavy refuse equipment in the collection, transportation,
and disposal of refuse. Incumbents are required to follow
specified safety precautions to avoid personal bodily injury
when emptying containers. The incumbents may be assigned to
operate commercial collection front loaders, roll-offs, and
a metal bin delivery truck. They may also be assigned to
residential collections, where they will be required to
operate an automatic side loader and or a rear loader. Other
functions of this position may require the routine duties of
fueling and lubricating of the entire solid waste fleet, the
cleaning of radiators and washing equipment.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
High School diploma or GED, supplemented by applicable
training in equipment operation and maintenance and two
years of increasingly responsible experience performing
maintenance and construction work involving the operation of
heavy equipment. All sanitation positions require a
commercial driver’s license. All streets position require a
commercial driver’s license Class A with tanker endorsement.
Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid
Arizona Water and/or Wastewater Certificate for specific
positions. Possession of a forklift certificate issued by
the State of Arizona is required for specific positions.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Extensive knowledge of the operation and maintenance
requirements of trucks and heavy power-driven equipment;
practices, methods, and materials used in construction,
maintenance, and sanitation work; traffic laws, ordinances,
regulations, and safety rules involved in truck and heavy
equipment operations; safe work practices.

Physical Demands
Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up
to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of
force constantly to move objects. Position is subject to
regular bending, twisting, kneeling, stooping, walking,
climbing, and standing.
Mental Demands
While performing the duties of this class, employees are
regularly required to use oral communication skills; analyze
and solve problems; interact with the general public,
vendors, public agencies, employees and others who may be
encountered in the course of work.
