Crime Scene Technician
GENERAL PURPOSE
Performs a wide variety of duties related to the collection,
preservation, and presentation of evidence; and, ensures
that evidence is collected and impounded as prescribed by
State and Federal law.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receive general supervision from a Lieutenant and/or
Sergeant. Exercises no supervision.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The duties and responsibilities listed below are intended
only as illustrations of the various types of work that may
be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties
does not exclude them from the position if the work is
similar, related or a logical assignment to this class.
• Assists at crime scenes, including dusting for and
removing latent fingerprints, marking evidence before
removal, and setting plaster casts of evidence
• Examines and processes latent prints, establishes Henry
classification on fingerprints, when necessary
• Serves as crime scene photographer; photographs people,
crime scenes, and property and other items related to the
investigation of criminal activity; processes film;
maintains photo lab and equipment
• Maintains an efficient record keeping system of
photographic line-up pictures and latent prints
• Prepares accurate and grammatically correct written
reports
• Testifies in court regarding photographs, fingerprints,
and other items related to the investigation of criminal
activity or evidence acquired
• Uses the AFIS applications system to review and input AFIS
information, prepares photo lineups
• Interprets and applies local, state, and federal laws and
regulations
• Interacts with the public, peers, supervisor, and/or other
employees in a positive manner
• Performs related duties, as assigned
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
High School Diploma or equivalent, supplemented by course
work in photography; crime scene processing or a related
subject. Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate
valid Arizona driver's license.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
At least one year of general experience in crime scene
processing and the collection, preservation, and
presentation of evidence. One year of photography or crime
scene investigation experience. Knowledge of the basic
organization and functions of a municipal law enforcement
agency; procedures and work methods required to dust for
fingerprints and setting plaster-like casts of evidence;
crime scene and general photography and techniques of photo
development.

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this class, employees are
regularly required to sit; talk or hear, in person and by
telephone; and to reach with hands and arms, lift and climb
ladders during investigations. Employees are required to
occasionally exert up to 20 pounds of force.
Mental Demands
While performing the duties of this class, employees
regularly are required to use oral and written communication
skills; read and interpret data, information and documents;
analyze and solve problems; interact with the general
public, public agencies, employees and others who may be
encountered during the course of work.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work environment characteristics described here are
representative of those an employee encounters while
performing the essential functions of this class. Reasonable

Exposure to fumes, lasers and hazardous chemicals used in
fingerprint development. Exposure to distraught victims,
combative prisoners, and injured and deceased persons, and
possibly infectious diseases; exposure can be substantially
controlled by the use of safety precautions. Exposure to
highly stressful situations for long hours at major crime
scenes. Work is performed in all weather conditions.
