GENERAL PURPOSE
Provide a wide variety of duties related to law
enforcement and crime prevention in support of the
Police Department Criminal Investigations Section or the
Traffic Services Section. This position assists in
investigation of crimes and status offenses, and acts as
a liaison to County attorneys, prosecutors, courts and
other Law Enforcement Agencies.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives general supervision from a Police Department
supervisor. Exercises no supervision.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Positions assigned to this class can be distinguished
from police officer by the fact that the incumbents are
not AZ POST certified, do not carry a gun, and do not
make arrests.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The duties and responsibilities listed below are

• Analyzes and prepares intelligence information and
completes detailed reports of crimes
• Conducts detailed preliminary and follow-up
investigations
• Conducts administrative hearings, interviews victims,
witnesses and suspects to further an investigation
• Provides discovery information to the defense,
prosecuting attorneys, victims and suspects
• Maintain current knowledge of various criminal and
civil statutes, case law, rules of criminal procedure,
and administrative policies and procedures
• Utilizes a computer system and accesses various data
systems to research police reports and track property
and evidence
• Functions as the the liaison between the Police
Department and other City departments, County Attorney,
and other law enforcement agencies in matters relating
to the investigations or other public safety concerns.
• Testifies and presents evidence in court and acts as
an expert witness
• Represent the Police Department and the City by
attending meetings and serving on committees
• Provides public education and training to
officersConducts studies of the organization and
procedures of the Department and organizes statistical
data on a monthly, quarterly, yearly basis and as
requested
• Assists in coordinating police activities with other
City departments and divisions and outside agencies.
• Interacts with the public, peers, supervisor, and/or
other employees in a positive, effective manner; and
responds to related questions and complaints
• Assists officers with crime scenes and the
investigations of serious traffic accidents and fatal
accidents
• Performs other duties as assigned
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or equivalent supplemented with
specialized police operations course work. Two years of
general police operations experience in a public safety
related setting.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of City, County, and State laws; interviewing
techniques; principles and procedures of investigating
and processing; crime analysis; crime prevention,
investigation, and identification techniques; general
police procedures.
Ability to prepare accurate and grammatically correct
written reports; interpret and apply laws and
regulations of the City, County, and State; communicate
clearly and concisely both orally and in writing;
prepare written reports and maintain efficient record
keeping systems; establish and maintain effective
working relationships with those contacted in the course
of work.

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this class, employees are

climb ladders during investigations. Employees are
required to occasionally exert up to 20 pounds of force.

employees and others who may be encountered during the
course of work.
