Building Automation Technician
GENERAL PURPOSE
Performs work of complex difficulty involving the
analysis, design, installation, programming,
maintenance, and troubleshooting of multi-site,
integrated building automation and or fire and security
systems. Provides building automation support to user
departments within the City; provide staff assistance to
the Technical Operations Supervisor and the Division
Manager.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Incumbents in this class are responsible for
maintenance, repair, and upkeep of all building
automated and or fire and security systems within the
City.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The duties listed below are intended only as

Building Automation Assignment
Conducts complex building automation system analysis
and design studies and prepares concept and design
specifications and management reports
Studies, evaluates, and recommends building automation
architectures, protocols, standards, hardware, software
and devices
Installs, upgrades, and programs software
Manages and troubleshoots building automation systems
Studies, evaluates, and recommends building automation
architectures, protocols, standards, hardware, software
and devices
Installs, upgrades, and programs software
Manages and troubleshoots building automation systems
Fire and Security Assignment
Studies, evaluates, and recommends fire alarm and
security system architectures, protocols, standards,
hardware, software and devices
Installs, upgrades, and programs software
Manages and troubleshoots fire alarm, special hazard
suppression systems, security systems and CCTV systems
Performs operational duties as assigned
May provide lead supervison and technical assistance
to technical staff; reviews and evaluates work products,
methods, and procedures; provides systems training as
required
OTHER DUTIES:
Subject to on-call support as needed
Prepares reports on related projects
Operates a computer and related equipment as required
Works cooperatively with customers in a responsive,
helpful, courteous and tactful manner
Communicates clearly and concisely, both orally and in
writing
Establishes and maintains cooperative working
relationships with other project team members, managers,
key users and others contacted in the course of work
Performs other duties as required
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Associates degree from a college or university with a
major in electrical or mechanical engineering technology
or related field; and five years of progressively
responsible experience in the analysis, design,
operation, and administration of large scale building
automation systems or building fire and security systems
for fire and security assignment. A valid Arizona
Drivers License and the ability to maintain
insurability under the Citys Vehicle Insurance Program.
NICET II required for Fire and Security Assignments.

Building automation architectures and theory and
principles of building automation and or fire alarm
security systems design and integration, including
protocols; principles and practices of advanced building
automation administration, such as; Barber Coleman,
Johnson Controls, Trane, McQuay, Delta, Siemens; system
device hardware and software configuration; operating
system policy management; monitoring or diagnostic
methods; applications and equipment; operating
principles, parameteres, uses, capabilities of various
building automation systems; analysis and evaluation
practices and procedures..
Fire and Security Assignment
Fire alarm and security systems architectures and theory
and principles of fire a fire alarm security systems
design and integration, including protocols; principles
and practices of advanced fire alarm and security system
administration, such as; Simplex, Edwards Systes
Technology, Johnson Controls, Honeywell, Radionics,
Fenwal, Gamewell; system device hardware and software
configuration; operating system policy management;
monitoring or diagnostic methods; applications and
equipment; operating principles, parameteres, uses,
capabilities of various fire alarm, fire suppression,
security systems, and CCTV systems; analysis and
evaluation practices and procedures.
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this class, employees are
regularly required to sit; talk or hear, in person and
by telephone; use hands repetitively to finger, handle,
feel, or operate computers and other standard office
equipment; and reach with hands or arms. Employees are
frequently required to walk and stand and occasionally
to lift up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities
required by this job include close vision, the ability
to discern color, and use of both eyes.
Mental Demands
While performing the duties of this class, employees are
regularly required to use oral and written communication
skills; real and interpret complex data, information and
documents; analyze and solve problems; use math and
mathematical reasoning; learn and apply new skills or
information; perform highly detailed work on multiple,
concurrent tasks; work under changing deadlines with
frequent interruptions; work effectively as a team
member, alternating between differing team roles and
assignments on a regular basis; and interact with City
managers, customers, employees, vendors, consultants and
other encountered in the course of work.
WORK ENVIRONMENT

performing the essential functions of this class.
