Aquatics Maintenance Specialist
GENERAL PURPOSE
An Aquatics Maintenance Specialist is responsible for
the maintenance schedule year round of the City of
Peoria aquatic facilities. This position coordinates the
maintenance of the landscape surrounding the pool
facility. This position is also responsible for
providing lead supervision and directing the maintenance
activities of all part-time maintenance staff at all
aquatic facilities. An additional responsibility is to
assist with and coordinate the activities of private
contractors in regards to renovation and new
construction of aquatic facilities.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXCERCISED
Incumbents in this class are responsible for the
technical maintenance of the aquatic facilities. Oversee
new pool construction and renovation projects. Ensure
that the landscape surrounding the pool area is well
maintained. The incumbent will be assigned to standby
duty during peak pool usage. This position is supervised
by the Aquatic’s Program Supervisor, who reviews the
work through reports and results achieved. The work is
performed under the hazardous conditions of toxic
chemicals.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESONSIBILITIES
The duties listed below are intended only as
illustrations of the various types of work that my be

• Coordinates the daily maintenance and inspection of
the pools.
• Established and coordinates an annual preventive
maintenance program for the City of Peoria’s pool
facilities.
• Oversee new pool construction and renovation projects.
• Maintains pool plans, technical specifications, and
other maintenance or construction history on all pools.
• Assists with preparation of technical specifications
for equipment or renovation work and bid specification
for work done by outside contractors.
• Assists in the interpretation of construction
drawings, blue prints, plans and specifications and
makes recommendations for new facilities.
• Serves as a technical advisor on County Health
Department regulations and requirements for public
pools.
• Provides initial response to calls for service from
pool staff, assesses maintenance needs, and takes
corrective action or routes a work order to the
appropriate city department.
• Understands and manages the mechanical operation of
pool equipment, i.e., gas heaters, pumps, chemical
apparatus, pool vacuums, etc… for safe operation and
reduce “down time”.
• Assists with the annual budget process regarding
maintenance and provides recommendations for future
needs.
• Assists with operating and capital improvement budgets
and estimates material and labor cost figures for pool
operation, construction and maintenance.
• Maintains work and activity records and prepares
written reports to the Aquatic’s Program Supervisor.
• Orders supplies, conducts inventories and maintains
purchase records, uses the cities procurement process.
• Works with the school maintenance staff and aquatic
recreation staff to coordinate schedules, programs and
operations.
• Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operation,
decrease turnaround times and works cooperatively and
jointly to provide quality customer service.
• Makes recommendations in the selection and placement
of new staff, monitors staff performance, and provides
training to assigned staff.
• Provides lead supervision to and evaluates part-time
maintenance aquatic staff.
• Researches new operational techniques, methods and
equipment, and recommends their application.
• Requisitions necessary materials and supplies.
• Maintains an adequate inventory of all equipment
supplies and materials.
• Develops, reviews, and updates written work
instructions and schedules.
• Keeps records and makes periodic or specials reports
on work performed by assigned personnel and contractors,
including daily time reports, shop and field orders, and
written maintenance records.
• Ensure proper safety precautions are being observed
for all staff and patrons.
• Prepares reports and plans for ADOSH & OSHA.
• Provides for staff training and development. Perform
other assigned duties as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent; and
three years of experience in the maintenance, operation,
or construction of large commercial public pools or an
equivalent combination of training and experience.
REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS
Valid Arizona driver’s license with a good driving
record. Must possess “Pool/Spa Operator” certification
through National Swimming Pool Foundation or “Aquatics
Facility Operator” certification through National
Recreation and Parks Association. Certified Pool
Operator Certificate. Self Contained Breathing Hazardous
Chemical Handling Certificate. Open Water Diving
Certificate.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of Methods, practices, techniques, tools and
equipment used in the maintenance and construction of
commercial pools; principles and practices of effective
employee supervision, safety practices and hazards of
equipment relating to pool maintenance; chemical water
treatment systems and pool water testing, principles and
practices of contract preparation and administration.
Plan, implement, inspect, a year round maintenance
guidelines, supervise, direct and train part-time
maintenance employees; identify and handle complex
maintenance problems, prepare clear and concise records,
reports, correspondence and other written materials,
exercise independent judgement and initiative within
established guidelines; establish and maintain effective
working relationships with those encountered in the
course of the work.

abilities required by this job include close vision,
distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth
perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

information and documents; analyze and solve problems;
use
math and mathematical reasoning; observe and interpret

WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work environment characteristics described here are
representative of those an employee encounters
while performing the essential functions of this class.
The employee works primarily in outside weather
conditions and is exposed to cold and extreme hot
temperatures. This noise level is usually loud in field
settings and moderately quiet in office settings.
