Accountant
GENERAL PURPOSE
Under
supervision, performs a variety of staff, systems and
cost-accounting assignments in connection with the
overall operation of the City’s accounting system.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This
is the journey-level class in the Accountant series.
Accountant is distinguished from Senior Accountant by
the level of responsibility assumed and complexity of
duties assigned. An employee in this classification
performs the less difficult and responsible duties
assigned to classes in this series.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The
duties listed below are intended only as illustrations
of the various types of work that may be performed. The

related or a logical assignment to this class.
Reviews
and participates in day-to-day accounting and
bookkeeping operations such as:

Sets
up accounting books or subsidiary records, classifies
accounting transactions, posts and journalizes.,

Reconciles and prepares year-end closing transactions
as an incident to perform other more difficult
accounting assignments.

Interprets accounting and other financial provisions
of a variety of laws and regulations , recommends
steps for their implementation.

Conducts less-complex cost surveys, revenue analyses
and accounting systems and procedural studies.

Writes
reports of survey findings in which recommendations
for modifications or other actions are made, and
participates in the installation of systems and
procedures.

Serves
as liaison with other City departments or governmental
agencies concerning accounting matters.

Administers improvement district assessments in
accordance with the Arizona Revised Statutes;
processes modifications to existing assessments.
Reconciles assessment revenue with general ledger..

Prepares year-end audit schedules.

Establishes and maintains cooperative working
relationships with those encountered in the course of
the work.

Supervises accounting and technical support staff as
necessary.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
A Bachelors Degree from an accredited
college or university with major course work in
accounting or related field; three years of increasingly
responsible accounting experience or an equivalent
combination of training or experience; experience
operating a personal computer including the ability to
utilize computer software to create spreadsheets and
other documents.
Knowledge of:
Principles, practices, processes and laws related to the
area of assignment; principles and practices of
financial recordkeeping; general accounting principles
and procedures, including fixed asset accounting; basic
computerized data processing principles.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience preparing and analyzing financial reports
utilizing accounting software. Experience as a
supervisor or lead worker; municipal accounting
experience.

documents; analyze and solve complex problems; use math
and mathematical reasoning; perform work under changing,
intensive deadlines on multiple concurrent tasks; work
