Title: Communications Supervisor

 FLSA Status: Non Exempt

BRIEF DESCRIPTION:

The purpose of this position is to supervise the police communications bureau and process all calls for emergency services.  This is accomplished by scheduling and assigning tasks, training specialists, responding to requests and inquiries, operating radio equipment, and ensuring proper dispatch procedures.  Other duties include creating calendars, maintaining files and information, and reviewing and correcting data.

Supervises staff by planning and supervising daily tasks and activities, establishing procedures and guidelines, approving requests, reviewing calls, fielding calls, ensuring verifications are complete, evaluating assigned services, coaching for performance improvement and recommending personnel actions.

Maintains equipment and systems by completing regular checks, reviewing and correcting codes, enabling and resetting passwords, maintaining files, troubleshooting and reporting equipment issues, drafting correspondence, completing systems testing, and responding to related requests.

Acts as subject matter expert by maintaining up to date knowledge and technical skills, answering and processing calls, updating CAD assignments, assisting with entries, conducting research, pulling reports, and confirming histories and warrant status.

Completes administrative assignments by monitoring traffic and calls, ensuring performance standards, maintaining records, updating policies and procedures, serving on committees, making presentations, processing mail, and completing reports.

Maintains files and records updating GEO information, running reports, correcting information, generating lists and reports, tracking changes, entering locations, and collaborating with officers and staff.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

-Description of Minimum Job Requirements-

Formal Education

Work requires knowledge of a specific vocational, administrative, or technical nature which may be obtained with a two year associate's degree, diploma or equivalent from a college, technical, business, vocational, or correspondence school.  Appropriate certification may be awarded upon satisfactory completion of advanced study or training.

Experience

Over one year up to and including three years experience.

Supervision

Work requires supervising and monitoring performance for a regular group of employees or division within a department including providing input on hiring/disciplinary actions and work objectives/ effectiveness, performance evaluations, and realigning work as needed.  A first line supervisor typically performs these functions.

Human Collaboration Skills

Decisions regarding implementation of policies may be made. Contact may involve support of controversial positions or the negotiation of sensitive issues or important presentations.  Contacts may involve stressful, negative interactions with the public requiring high levels of tact and the ability to respond to aggressive interpersonal interactions.

Freedom to Act

The employee normally performs the job by following established standard operating procedures and/or policies.  There is a choice of the appropriate procedure or policy to apply to duties.  Performance reviewed periodically.

Technical Skills

Work requires a comprehensive, practical knowledge of a technical field with use of analytical judgment and decision-making abilities appropriate to the work environment of the organization.

Budget Responsibility

Position has limited fiscal responsibility.  May assist in the collection of data in support of recommendations for departmental budget allocations.  May monitor division or program/project level budget and expenditures.

Reading

Intermediate - Ability to read papers, periodicals, journals, manuals, dictionaries, thesauruses, and encyclopedias. Ordinarily, such education is obtained in high school up to college. However, it may be obtained from experience and self-study.

Math

Basic - Ability to perform the four basic arithmetic operations.  Ordinarily, such education is obtained in elementary school up to high school. However, it may be obtained from experience and self-study.

Writing

Intermediate - Ability to write reports, prepare business letters, expositions, and summaries with proper format, punctuation, spelling, and grammar, using all parts of speech.  Ordinarily, such education is obtained in high school up to college. However, it may be obtained from experience and self-study.
