City Council District Roundup

Councilmember Vicki Hunt, Acacia District

Construction on Peoria’s second community park should begin by next summer. The yet–to-be-named park will be built just south of Olive, east of 83rd Avenue. Lighted youth sports fields, group picnic facilities, and possibly a skate court and urban lake for fishing are part of the plans for this new 60-acre gem. The park will be built in phases; phase two is scheduled for construction in about two years. For more facts, call 623-773-7137 or visit www.peoriaaz.gov/BuildingPeoria.

Upgraded landscaping near the New River pedestrian trail north of Thunderbird Road was planted in late June to guide access and deter crime. The thorny plants deter trail users from the area of block fences that separate the trail from the adjacent neighborhood to the west. In addition to the safety improvement, the new desert vegetation brings a renewed sense of beauty to the trail.

I am excited to announce that the first segment of the Happy Valley Road Project will be open soon! The area from Terramar Boulevard to 83rd Avenue is nearing completion and will eventually extend across to Lake Pleasant Parkway; providing a vital east-west connection across northern Peoria. We will be hosting a grand opening of the roadway in December; look for details soon. For more information on the project, visit www.peoriaaz.gov/BuildingPeoria.

Anyone who drives in Peoria and throughout the Valley realizes that something must be done to ease traffic congestion. We are working with other Northwest Valley cities to explore commuter train opportunities on the existing Grand Avenue rail corridor. Commuter trains are a fast, easy way to move people from the suburbs to the Valley’s urban core, and Peoria can help lead the way in making this commuter train line a reality. If you have questions, please contact me at 623-773-7306 or Ron.Aames@peoriaaz.gov.

Now that the cooler weather is here, it's time to get outside and get fit! Join me at the Annual Thanksgiving Day Classic at the Peoria Sports complex. The Peoria Diamond Club and the Arizona Road Racers put on the event to raise money for a great cause. Last year they raised $12,000 for the west Valley Child Crisis Center. There will be a 10-mile and a 5K run, and a 1 mile Fun Run/Walk. See you there!

One of our greatest rights is the right to vote. Unfortunately in most elections, too few of us actually take the time to vote and make our views and preferences known. In the September, 2008 election, turnout in Maricopa County was barely 20 percent. In other words, 80 percent of the people registered to vote in Maricopa County decided not to. Voting is our voice and our power; I urge you all to take a moment to think of that awesome power and responsibility in the next election. VOTE!
