Educational Tips

Smoke Detectors:
Smoke detectors save lives. Be sure to clean and check the battery in your smoke detector monthly. Place a smoke detector in each bedroom and one in between living areas and bedrooms.

Weed and Debris:
Weed and debris are a major cause of fires in the Peoria area. Please be sure to keep any growth you may have on your property cut back at least 30 feet from your house or other buildings.

Planning a Project:
Are you planning a project around the house? Before you dig or trench, please call Blue Stake at 263-1100 to identify the locations of all utility lines on your property. This is a free service and may save you from breaking an underground utility line, which is not only dangerous, but also costly.

Natural Gas:
Natural gas may be used in your home or business. Natural gas has an odor added to allow detection during a leak. If you smell gas in your house or business, evacuate the building leaving all the windows and doors open. Get to a safe location and call 9-1-1. You can be overtaken quickly by natural gas so do not delay exiting the location.

Fire Extinguishers:
Used properly, portable fire extinguishers can save lives and property by putting out a small fire or containing it until the fire department arrives. However, your safety is first, when in doubt do not fight the fire. When purchasing a fire extinguisher, purchase one that is rated for use on all types of fires. This type of extinguisher is rated multipurpose (A-B-C models.) When selecting a fire extinguisher make sure it is large enough to fight a fire but not so large that you can't carry it.

Should I Fight a Fire?

Remember the following:

  • Before you start to fight the fire make sure everyone has left the building or home.

  • Make sure the fire department has been called (9-1-1).

  • Make sure you have an escape route.

  • After the fire is out, or if you had to leave due to the fire spreading, check your emergency meeting location to make sure everyone is safe and accounted for.

Escape Plan:
Be sure to establish an escape plan for your home and practice it. The family should have at least two locations to exit the house and then have a location established as a meeting point to make sure everyone is accounted for.

Swimming Pools:
Swimming pools and water are a lot of fun. But remember when around pools, or water, to watch your children. It takes very little time for a child to slip under the water.  Visit the Drowning Prevention Coalition of Central Arizona for helpful information.  Peoria's Building Safety's webpage has additional swimming pool guidelines

Heat:
Be aware of the heat! If you are going to spend some time enjoying the sights around Peoria or just work in your yard, please take sometime to prepare for the heat. Make sure you have plenty of water and wear a hat and light clothing.

If you start to feel light headed or ill:

  • Get out of the heat.

  • Relax and drink plenty of water or a sports drink.

  • Move to a cooler location.

If this does not help, call 9-1-1 for medical assistance. Do not drink soda or alcoholic beverages while being exposed to the sun, as they will only dry you out.

Learn More About Your Local Fire Department:

What is the Peoria Fire Department’s ISO rating?

The Peoria Fire Department has an Insurance Service Organization rating of 3 ( 1 is the highest and 10 the lowest) which results in lower fire insurance costs for Peoria residents.

The Insurance Service Organization (ISO) Rating measures the major elements of a community's fire suppression system and develops a numerical grading called a Public Protection Classification or ISO Rating. Most insurance companies use ISO's PPC codes in establishing premiums for both commercial and residential property policies. In general, insurers develop their rating systems such that the better the PPC at a given property, the lower the insurance rate will be.

For more information about the ISO Ratings/ Fire Suppression Rating schedule please visit the ISO Mitigation Online website at isomitigation.com.

Informational literature can be obtained at any Peoria Fire Station. Additional brochures or materials are available from the Peoria Fire Prevention Division located at 8351 W. Cinnabar or call 623-773-7279.
