The Fire
Prevention Division recently purchased a Mobile
Combination Sprinkler/Fire and Life Safety Safe House to
educate target populations on fire safety related
issues. The 39-foot length mobile classroom is used to
instruct its audience on conducting home fire safety
walkthroughs, planning and practicing home escape
routes, use of smoke detectors, fire extinguishers,
sprinkler systems and proper use of the 9-1-1 system.
This real-life model creates an environment that
provides its audience with the knowledge
needed to
prevent fires, and the steps to follow if they find
themselves in a fire situation. Although we speak to
audiences about fire and life safety issues in a
classroom or assembly environment, the mobility of the
safety and fire education house provides greater
accessibility to specific groups. By using a simulator
we can provide a new and more effective method of
communicating fire safety messages through “hands-on”
instruction.
For example, some of the features of the mobile fire
house include:
Kitchen:
The use of appliances in the kitchen provides an
opportunity to discuss common kitchen hazards to both
children and adults.
Non-Toxic
Water Based Smoke System:
This demonstrates the need to “stay low in smoke” and
not to breathe the toxic fumes and gases associated with
an actual fire.
Phone
System:
The 9-1-1 Phone System permits children the opportunity
to practice calling 9-1-1 from inside or outside of the
fire safety house. The dispatcher’s telephone is located
in the fully enclosed control room, which is staffed by
trained personnel.
Living
Room:
Spending time with the participants discussing various
home hazards such as electrical outlets, frayed
electrical cords, playing with matches, etc.
Bedroom Door:
Participants are instructed how to feel a closed door
for heat – they are taught that a warm or hot door
indicates fire on the other side and they are to use an
alternate exit such as the side door or the rear window
with stairs..
Sprinkler System:
The floor plan allows the audience to view a dramatic
“live fire” demo from the outside of the coach. The
sprinkler demonstration area is located on the front of
the vehicle and the Fire Safety House portion is located
in the rear.
The purchase of this safety house was made possible
through a Federal FEMA Grant as well as the
contributions of our community partners Sun Health and
Southwest Gas.
If you would like to have the mobile fire safety house
demonstrated at your school, community or senior centers
or senior care homes; homeowner’s association meeting,
community center, library, or other public venue, please
