Irrigation Controller/Timer Rebate Program – up to $30
Purpose: The intent of this rebate is to encourage a permanent reduction in the amount of water used for landscape irrigation by establishing an incentive to allow customers to qualify for a credit on their water utility bill. Installing an irrigation controller on your irrigation system will allow you to water your landscape more efficiently.
Description: An irrigation controller/timer operates the watering cycle on your irrigation system by automatically turning the control valves on and off at pre-selected times. Thus, it controls when, how long, and how often the irrigation system runs based upon the programmed schedule. An irrigation controller, which possesses appropriate features and is properly scheduled, can keep your plants healthy and result in significant water savings and lower water bills.
Requirements: An account holder will be eligible to receive a rebate if he/she meets the following qualifications:
- A City of Peoria water customer (not sewer or trash only).
- Only irrigation controllers purchased on or after July 1, 2009 are eligible.
- A copy of the purchase receipt is required before the application can be processed.
- Required features of irrigation controller
- At least 3 programs/stations
- Multiple start times
- Run times from 1 minute to several hours
- Odd/even, weekly, and interval (up to 14 days) program capabilities
- “Off”, “Auto", and "Manual" operation modes (without disturbing programming)
- The City requires that irrigation systems must have a backflow preventer, and a permit is needed when one is newly installed. City permits are also required when irrigation systems are retrofited or newly installed. The permit fee will be waived as part of this program. [If your installation requires a City permit, your account will not be credited until the Building Safety Division has issued you a permit and has inspected your property.]
- Only one rebate per address.
- Watering should be restricted to 8 PM to 6 AM during May through September.
Recommended Features of Irrigation Controller
365 day calendar, adjusted for leap year
Rain shut-off or moisture sensor capability
Water budget/percent feature from 0-200%, in 10% increments – allows for an increase or decrease in run time by a certain percentage due to weather changes
Battery back-up and / or non-volatile memory – if a battery is not installed, the controller automatically resets to irrigate every day for ~10 minutes after a power failure. Programs are reinstated when power returns.
Diagnostic circuitry to notify homeowner when a station has shorted or a power failure has occurred
Trees, shrubs, etc. should be connected to different valves on the irrigation system so the controller can run different watering schedules for each type of vegetation.
Procedure: To request an application, complete the online REBATE APPLICATION REQUEST FORM or call (623) 773-7286. Once your name, address, phone number, and account number have been verified, an official application will be sent through the mail.
After installing the irrigation controller, complete the application and submit it to the City of Peoria Public Works-Utilities Department. The Water Conservation staff will review your application (and purchase receipt) and call you to schedule an appointment. A City of Peoria employee will visit your property to view the irrigation controller and provide education on irrigation system maintenance, the controller, and water scheduling.
NOTE: Instead of an onsite meeting, you may choose to attend a free workshop on irrigation controllers, sponsored by the City of Peoria Utilities Department. Please indicate on your application, whether you would like an onsite meeting or attend a workshop.
After approval of your application, $30 will be credited to your City of Peoria utility account within 1-2 billing cycles. The rebate amount may not exceed the amount paid for controller. If you purchased the controller for less than $30, the purchase price will be the rebate amount. If your installation requires a City permit, your account will not be credited until the Building Safety Division has issued you a permit and has inspected your property.
After receiving the rebate, you will receive seasonal reminders (approximately four per year) to adjust your watering schedule. Please indicate on your application whether you would prefer your reminders by e-mail or direct mail.
Questions: If you have further questions, e-mail conservation@peoriaaz.gov or call (623) 773-7286.
