What are Peoria's laws?

The City of Peoria has laws on the book that cover a wide variety of subjects, including issues relating to dogs, parked cars, security alarms, construction noise, recreational vehicles, weeds, etc. Copies of these laws, and more information may be obtained by calling the Office of the City Clerk at 623-773-7340. How can I obtain city documents?

The Office of the City Clerk, and its Records and Information Management Division are responsible for preserving, maintaining, retrieving, and disposing of the majority of the city's records in conformance with federal, state, and local laws. To obtain copies of council agendas, meeting documents, and minutes, city code and other ordinances, Boards and Commission agendas, election financial documents and others call 623-773-7340. For other city records call Records and Information Management at 623-773-7109.

When do Peoria's Boards and Commissions meet, and how can I serve on one?

The larger Boards or Commissions of the city, such as the Planning and Zoning Commission, Parks and Recreation Board, Arts Commission, Library Board, the Building Board of Appeals and Board of Adjustments generally meet once or twice per month. Volunteers spend about 8 hours or so attending these meetings. Other Boards or Commissions, such as Public Safety Retirement for Fire and Police and the Personnel Board generally meet as needed.

The City Council does, from time-to-time form ad hoc committees to deal with specific matters, and once their task is completed, the committee ceases to exist.  Appointments to the regular city Boards and Commissions are made by the City Council through recommendations of the City Council Sub-Committee on Boards and Commissions Appointments

When and how does Peoria hold elections?

The City of Peoria holds non-partisan elections every two years in September/November of the even years. The City’s Mayor is elected at-large; voters within each one of the six City Council Electoral Districts elect a candidate who lives in their District as their Council representative.

Polling Places are generally located no more than 15 miles from the residents, and locations vary depending on the election being held, and the availability of suitable facilities within the given areas. Traditionally, polling places are set up in schools, public libraries, meeting halls, or neighborhood recreational facilities.

Information regarding a City election or polling locations is generally available 30 days prior to an election, and may be obtained by calling: The Office of the City Clerk at 623-773-7340. For other than municipal elections held within Maricopa County call: Maricopa County Elections Department at 602-506-1511.

How can I register to vote?

State law requires that you be properly registered to vote no less than 29 days prior to an election, and that you will be at least 18 years of age by the election, in order to be eligible to vote in that election. Voter registration forms may be picked up at any Post Office, the Peoria Public Library, and Peoria's Municipal Office Complex - front lobby and Office of the City Clerk. With the passage of Proposition 200 by the voters of Arizona at the 2004 General Election, proof of citizenship must be submitted with all NEW voter registration forms. Acceptable evidence of United States citizenship includes one of the following:

  • An Arizona driver license number (or copy of the license) or non-operating identification license number (or copy of the identification license), issued after 10/01/1996.

  • A driver license or non-operating identification license from another state that identifies United States Citizenship.

  • A legible photocopy of a birth certificate with the name of the applicant that verifies United States Citizenship.

  • A legible photocopy of the pertinent pages of the United States Passport.

  • United States naturalization certificate number or the presentation of the original certificate of naturalization. (If only the number is provided, the County Recorder must verify the number with INS prior to adding the applicant to the voter rolls.)

  • Bureau of Indian Affairs Card Number, Tribal Treaty Card Number or Tribal Enrollment Number.

A name cannot be added to the voter registration file until the requirement is met.
