Water Waste is Just a Leak Away

The smallest leak can result in a waste of thousands of gallons of water and cost you money. A continuous leak from a 1/16” hole (roughly the size of a pinhead) at 60 psi water pressure, during a three-month period, will waste approximately 74,000 gallons of water. Some leaks are more obvious than others or have been leaking for so long you are unaware until you conduct a leak check.

The best way to determine if you have a leak is to shut off all water uses inside and outside the home. Read your water meter. After an hour without using any water, reread your meter. If the reading went up, you have a leak. Common culprits are dripping faucets, a leaky flapper valve in your toilet, or an unseen leak in your irrigation system. Tips for Saving Water

Small changes in daily habits can add up to saving water and money. Ask yourself these questions:

Do you wash only full loads of laundry?
Do you use the trash can instead of the toilet for disposing of tissues, bugs or garbage?
Do you turn off the water while brushing your teeth or shaving?
Do you compost your kitchen waste instead of using the garbage disposal?
Is your dishwasher full before you start it?
Do you spend less than 10 minutes in the shower?
Do you regularly check your irrigation system for leaks and worn out or broken components?
Do your sprinklers only water your plants or grass and not the sidewalk, driveway or street? Misty waving

Hopefully you answered yes to all of these questions. If not, you may want to give some or all of these a try. If you would like more water saving tips, go online to www.wateruseitwisely.com for more than a hundred water saving ideas or visit conserve.peoriaaz.gov.
