In an effort to increase its own efficiency, the Department employs leak loggers to detect leaks in the water distribution system.  As the system ages, small leaks can occur that are not detected on the surface. The leak loggers are designed to ‘listen’ for small leaks that may be caused by a crack in the pipe or a worn out part.  This ensures that leaks are quickly found and repaired to prevent the unnecessary waste of water between our treatment plants and your tap.

Parks Management –City parks continuously strive to increase water efficiency.  Outdated irrigation systems are being upgraded to water-wise irrigation controllers that help manage water consumption.  Untreated water (and reclaimed water in the future) is used for irrigation whenever possible to reduce the use of drinking water.  Large investments in time are made to train park workers to shut down irrigation systems when vandalism occurs or when water waste is reported by citizens during evening and weekend hours.  To report water leaks or malfunctioning irrigation systems in Peoria parks call park rangers at 623-764-0407.

Sports Complex Management – The Peoria Sports Complex has been aggressively reducing its water use for the past four years.  The installation of a central irrigation controller equipped with a weather station helps ensure that irrigation only occurs when the turf really needs it.  The controller uses factors such as weather conditions, soil moisture holding

capacity, and plant water needs to determine the best watering schedule.  Irrigation water use at the complex has decreased nearly 40% since installation of the central controller, and the turf is healthier and more vigorous than before.

Facilities Management –All city buildings are managed with water conservation in mind. In some buildings, the use of waterless urinals is being investigated to not only save drinking water but to reduce wastewater treatment costs. In addition, technology to increase the reusability of water in our cooling tower helps make the fountain at City Hall an intriguing combination of practicality and efficiency.

Your Investment In Our Water Future
